Morgan's game ends early, Hampton wins

HAMPTON, Va. -- Morgan State's game versus Hampton ended prematurely on Senior Night Saturday night at the HU Convocation Center.

Hampton was declared the winner over the visiting Bears when it was called with 13:33 left after an altercation that resulted in two Morgan State ejections. The Bears walked off the floor falling to 6-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and 10-17 overall.

It was the last MEAC regular season meeting between the two programs, as Hampton has announced that it will leave the MEAC and join the Big South Conference for the 2018-19 athletic season. And tonight's contest was certainly a memorable one for both sides.

Hampton (16-14, 11-4), who's now a half-game out of first place in the conference standings, was leading 57-38 when the game came to a sudden conclusion.

Morgan State struggled throughout the contest as they were without the services of senior forward Phillip Carr who was sidelined tonight.

Senior standout guard Tiwian Kendley shouldered most of the scoring load for the Bears as he accounted for 18 of the team's 38 total points. Kendley converted 11-of-12 free throws but was held to just 3 for 13 from the field as the only Bear to score in double-figures.

Malique Trent-Street paced the Pirates with 16 points, while Charles Wilson-Fisher chipped in nine points and eight rebounds. Jermaine Marrow added eight points, six boards and five assists.

The Bears were out-rebounded by a 33-20 margin and was held to 31 percent shooting from the field and was 2-for-14 from beyond the arc. Hampton shot 48 percent from the field.

A pair of free throws from Jermaine Marrow early in the opening half made it 9-8 and Hampton led the rest of the way.

Earlier, Morgan State's Stanley Davis got a steal and took it to the other end for a dunk that gave the Pirates their only lead of the game, 8-7.

Morgan State continues conference action when they face cross-town rival Coppin State (5-24, 5-9) on Monday (Feb. 26) at Hill Field House. It will be Senior Night for the Bears as Tiwian Kendley and Phillip Carr will be playing in their final home game. Game time is slated for 8 p.m. ET.
