Bethune-Cookman Avoids Upset; Holds Off Morgan State In Overtime, 64-57

Tykyrah Williams scores her 1,000th point

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 19, 2018)-Angel Golden scored a game-high 19 points and Chasimmie Brown grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds to go with 12 points and a game-high four steals, as visiting Bethune-Cookman held off Morgan State, 64-57 in overtime in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Monday at Hill Field House.

Ashanti Hunt and Emily Williams each scored 11 points, as the Lady Wildcats, who entered the contest ranked No. 25 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll, remained unbeaten in MEAC play.

Bethune-Cookman (21-4, 13-0 MEAC) extended its season-long winning streak to 13 straight with the win, while improving to 30-27 all-time against Morgan State and upping its winning streak to four straight over the Lady Bears.

Morgan State (14-12, 7-6 MEAC) had its two-game winning streak snapped and has now lost its last two games at home to fall to 9-3 on its home floor.

The tough loss put a damper on several Morgan State performances on the evening. Tykyrah Williams scored a team-high 17 points for the Lady Bears in the loss, giving her 1,001 points for her career and making her the program's 15th Lady Bear to reach the 1,000 point plateau. Williams, who has also grabbed 553 career rebounds, became the seventh Lady Bear player to join the 1,000 points and 500 rebounds club.

Lexus Spears earned her second consecutive double-double and third of the season. Spears pulled down a team-high 16 rebounds and had 15 points. Braennan Farrar recorded three assists, giving her 342 for her career and moving her past Mary Frazier (340 assists from 1978-83) for second all-time at Morgan State.

Morgan State overcame a 16-12 first quarter deficit by using an 8-0 run to start the second quarter and take a 20-16 lead. The guests would however lead at the intermission, 32-29.

Bethune-Cookman would extend its lead to 40-31 after using an 8-2 spurt to start the third quarter. The Lady Bears would counter with a 7-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Jihayah Chavis to bring Morgan State within 40-38 with 42 seconds left in the quarter. B-CU would add a Hunt free throw to take a 41-38 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Morgan State, which just didn't seem to get into any consistent rhythm, trailed 48-44 with 4:46 remaining in the contest following a layup by Golden. Morgan State appeared to have waked up in time and put together just enough offense and defense to respond with a 10-0 run.

Spears got things going when she knocked down a free throw to complete a three-point play and cut the Lady Wildcats' lead to a point at 48-47. Chavis then stole the ball and feed it to Farrar for a layup, giving Morgan State the lead back at 49-48. Chavis later drained a three from the right elbow, making it a 52-48 Morgan State lead. Williams' layup gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the game at six points (54-48) with 1:41 to play.

But as quickly as the momentum changed in Morgan's favor, the Lady Wildcats snatched it right back.

Bethune-Cook man's Brianna Battle, who would finish with seven points, including two three pointers in a reserve role, would leave her mark on the final 1:41 of regulation. Battle would drain her first three-pointer with 1:26 to play to cut the Lady Bears' lead to 54-51. B-CU would force a turnover and 21 seconds later Battle would be left alone nearly inches away from the spot she hit the previous three-pointer at and knocked down another one to even the score at 54 all with 1:05 remaining and essentially sending the game into overtime.

After Golden hit a three-pointer from the left corner to give the guests a 57-55 lead at the 4:37 mark of the extra session, Williams scored her 1,000th-point on a layup to even the score at 57 all with 3:43 left to play. That would be Morgan State's final points, as B-CU closed out the game scoring the last seven points for the victory.

B-CU finished the game shooting 42.9 percent (24-of-56), including 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from three-point range. The Lady Wildcats outscored Morgan State, 11-4 in fast break points and 11-0 in bench scoring.

The Lady Bears shot 20-of-59 (33.9 percent) for the game and was 3-for-10 from three-point range. Morgan State shot 73 percent from the charity stripe, connecting on 14-of-19 free throws. Morgan State held a 41-38 rebounding advantage and outscored the visitors, 19-4 in second chance scoring.

Morgan State will take to the road when it travels to Hampton, Va. to take on defending MEAC Tournament champion, Hampton on Saturday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center. The game will be the final MEAC regular season contest between the two programs. Hampton has announced that it will leave the MEAC and join the Big South Conference at the start of the 2018-19 athletic season.

The Lady Pirates were an 88-41 winner at home on Monday over Savannah State.
