Western Kentucky Too Much For Lady Bears, 90-43

BOWLING GREEN, KY. (Nov. 28, 2018)-The Lady Toppers scored the first eight points of the game and later used a 22-0 run for nearly a six-minute span to put the game out of reach en route to a 90-43 non-conference victory over Morgan State on Wednesday evening at E.A. Diddle Arena. The contest was the first meeting between the two programs.

The 90 points were the most given up by Morgan State this season and the most since last season when Iowa scored 90 in a win (90-46) over the Lady Bears in the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament (11/22/17).

Morgan State (1-8) dropped its seventh straight game with the loss, while Western Kentucky improved to 3-6.

Dee Givens scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range to lead five Lady Toppers in double figures scoring. Sherry Porter scored 17 points, while going 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc. Arame Niang came off the bench to record a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and Raneem Elgedawy finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Meral Abdelgawad scored 11 points and Whitney Creech dished out a game-high 10 assists.

WKU would shoot 52.5 percent (32-61) from the floor and hit 57.1 percent (12-21) from three-point range. The Lady Toppers connected on 14-of-15 from the charity stripe for 93.3 percent.

Morgan State was 17-of-60 from the floor (28.3 percent) and shot 4-for-14 (28.6 percent) from downtown. The Lady Bear went to the free throw line seven times and converted five for 71.4 percent.

After falling behind 8-0, Morgan State pulled within 16-10 after a basket by Adre'onia Coleman with 3:01 left in the first quarter, but the Lady Toppers scored the next six points to increase their lead to 22-10. Morgan State would close out the period on a 4-0 spurt to trail 22-14 after one period of play.

Morgan State trailed 34-22 after a three-pointer by Ashia McCalla with 3:53 left in the second period. However, Western Kentucky would close out the period on a 15-0 run to take a 49-22 cushion into the locker room.

The Lady Toppers would score the first seven points to start the third quarter to extend their lead, 56-22 with 8:41 remaining in the period. Coleman scored on a layup at the 8:16 mark to end a 22-0 run by WKU, which began the final 3:53 of the second period.

Coleman led Morgan State with 13 points and eight rebounds, both team highs. Naomi Bolasingh finished with 10 points. Kayla Horn grabbed six rebounds and had a team-best two steals.

The Lady Toppers held a 48-25 rebounding advantage over Morgan State. WKU had 21 assists in the game to the Lady Bears' eight. 

Morgan State will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 2, when they travel to Miami, Fla. to take on its second straight Conference USA opponent in Florida International. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
