Lady Bears End Losing Skid With Victory Over South Carolina State, 65-55

MSU Starters Combine For 55 Points; Spears Joins 500 Rebound Club

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 29, 2018)-Morgan State junior Adre'onia Coleman recorded her third double-double this season on Monday evening, as she finished with a game-high 14 rebounds and had 13 points, as Morgan State ended a season-long four-game losing skid with a 65-55 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory at Hill Field House over South Carolina State.

Coleman, who shot 6-of-14 from the floor, while adding an assist and two steals in 36 minutes of play, was one of four Morgan State starters to score in double figures. The Lady Bears starters would account for 55 of the team's 65 points, as Morgan State (11-10, 4-4 MEAC) closed out the first half of the league schedule with a win and improved to 9-1 at home.

Senior Tykyrah Williams scored a team-high 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds, falling shy of a double-double herself. Williams would also add five assists, a block and a game-high four steals. Fellow seniors Braennan Farrar and Lexus Spears also added to the starting lineup scoring attack. Farrar added 13 points and had a game-high two blocked shots, while Spears finished with 12 points and pulled down six rebounds to put her name in the Morgan State record books. Spears would became the 13th Lady Bear player to reach the 500-rebound plateau.

"It's a huge honor to be recognized and to complete this within just three years of playing," said Spears on her 501 career rebounds. "I've had so many obstacles placed in front of me and with God, my family and my girls, I've been able to overcome it all. I've been extremely blessed."

"It was extremely important for us to overcome this obstacle," said Spears on the win. "Dropping those four games straight, was extremely tough on us as a team. We had to learn to stop dwelling on what we were doing wrong and focus on what kept us efficient thus far and I think we did a great job picking it up this game."

South Carolina State (7-13, 2-6 MEAC) was led by Kemoni Jenkins, who finished with 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had a game-high four steals. Bryeasha Blair added 10 points, eight rebounds and had three steals, before fouling out in 38 minutes of play. Kyesha Lewis came off the bench to score 11 points.

The Lady Bears shot 34 percent (21-of-61) from the floor, including 5-of-16 from three-point range for 31 percent.

SC State shot 19-of-57 (33 percent) and was 3-of-11 from three-point range for 27 percent.

Morgan State overcame a 32-29 halftime deficit by using a 10-5 run to start the third period and take a 39-37 lead on a layup by Spears with 4:41 remaining. The Lady Bears would outscore the guests 18-7 in the third and held a 47-39 lead heading into the fourth.

The Lady Bears will travel to Norfolk, Va. this weekend to take on the Norfolk State Spartans on Saturday, Feb. 3. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. from Echols Hall. The Spartans were a 70-49 winner over visiting Florida A&M on Monday.
