Lady Bears Drop Series Finale To Coppin State, 11-7

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 30, 2017)-The Morgan State softball team dropped its series finale against rival Coppin State on Sunday afternoon, following an 11-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss at CSU Softball Field. The Eagles would take two of three games over the weekend from Morgan State to win the season series.

Coppin State (10-40, 7-11 MEAC) secured the fourth and final spot in the upcoming MEAC tournament with the win and has now won five of the last six series over Morgan State dating back to 2012.

For Morgan State (23-16, 12-3 MEAC), the Lady Bears suffered their first MEAC series loss of the season. Morgan State now sits in second-place in the MEAC Northern Division standings, two games behind first-place Hampton.

The Lady Bears and Hampton wrap up the regular season with a three-game series in Baltimore on May 5-6. A sweep by the Lady Bears will give Morgan State the northern division crown. Hampton needs just one win over Morgan State in order to claim the title. Whether Morgan State wins the division crown or not, the Lady Bears must win at least once to secure the No. 2 seed for the tournament.

Morgan State evened the score at 1-1 on a RBI single hit by Stormy Zyzyk in the top of the third inning to score Kate Vosper.

Coppin State would then respond with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase its lead to 5-1.

The Lady Bears would begin to chip away at the deficit, getting two runs back in the fifth inning. Mikaela Browdy doubled to left center to score Korynna Lara and Anissa Morales to make it a 5-3 contest.

The hosts got back on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Cloe' Ochoa doubled to left field to score Haley Bravo and make it a three-run game at 6-3.

Morgan State would continue to fight and broke out with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take its first lead of the game at 7-6. Morales got the scoring going with a single up the middle to score Vosper and Lara singled to center to score Audrianna Alvarez to make it a 6-5 Coppin State lead. Morales would score on a ground out to the third basemen hit by Browdy to even the score at 6-6. Jenny Lynch then hit a pinch hit single to right center to score Lara and give the visitors their first lead of the game at 7-6.

It appeared as if the Lady Bears had pulled off another comeback victory over Coppin State, but that would not be the case this time. The Eagles would score five runs in the bottom half of the sixth frame for the 11-7 victory.

The Eagles loaded the bases for Bravo, who singled in Patricia Soria, who led off the inning with a walk. A single by Kimberly Evans allowed two more runs to cross the plate and give the hosts a 9-7 lead. Coppin State wasn't done, as Megan Narvaez doubled to right field to bring in Bravo for the 10th run, still with no outs. The Eagles closed out the scoring when Hatika James scored on a passed ball to make it an 11-7 Coppin State lead.

The Lady Bears will travel to Villanova, Pa. on Wednesday, May 3 to take on the Villanova Wildcats in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
