Morgan State Uses Late Surge To Beat Hornets, 65-54

DOVER, Del.Phillip Carr scored a game-high 16 points with seven rebounds and Tiwian Kendley added 12 points as the Bears pulled away for their second straight win, posting a 65-54 victory over Delaware State on Monday night at Memorial Hall.

Morgan State improves to 12-14 overall and 9-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The win avenged a 56-45 loss to Delaware State on Feb. 11 at Hill Field House. The Hornets dropped their second straight game in a row and dropped to 9-20 overall and 6-8 in the conference.

Delaware State took a 44-41 lead after Devin Morgan hit a 3-pointer with 8:13 remaining. It was part of a 10-1 run by the Hornets.

But the Bears rallied and made their move when Hornets center Demola Onifade fouled out of the ballgame. Carr stepped to the line and hit a pair of free throws to give the Bears a 47-46 lead with 6:08 remaining – it was the seventh lead change of the game.

A baseline jumper by Martez Cameron (6 pts), followed by a steal and layup by Antonio Gillespie (7 pts) helped to put the Bears up 55-48. The Bears would go on to outscore the Hornets down the stretch by a 10-2 margin.

Morgan State dominated the Hornets on the boards where they held a 43-26 advantage, including a 16-5 edge on the offensive glass. The Bears scored 38 points in the paint and 19 points off of second chance opportunities.

Morgan State shot 42.9% for the game, connecting on 24-of-56 field goal attempts and was 2-of-14 from beyond the arc (14.3%).

The Hornets were held to 20-for-51 shooting from the field (39.2%), including 5-of-19 from three-point territory (26.3%).

Devin Morgan led the Hornets with 11 points and four assists. DeAndre Haywood chipped in 9 points.

Morgan State led 13-7 before the offense stalled and went on a 6-minute scoring drought. Back to back 3-pointers by Kobe Gantz and Kavon Waller helped spark an 8-0 run by the Hornets to help take a 15-13 lead, their first of the night. The teams would trade the lead for the remainder of the stanza with Morgan State taking a 25-23 lead at halftime.

Morgan State will host the Hampton Pirates (12-14, 9-4 MEAC) at Hill Field House on Saturday, Feb. 25. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
