Tykyrah Williams knocked down two free throws with .4 seconds remaining on the clock to give the visiting Morgan State Lady Bears a 73-72 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Howard on Monday evening at Burr Gymnasium. The win marked a season-long third straight for Morgan State and its fourth straight victory over Howard.
Williams would finish with a team-high 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Zuri White recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds and
Chelsea Mitchell added 13 points, while
Braennan Farrar totaled 10 points to tie former Lady Bear Carla Thomas for 10
th all-time at Morgan State with 1,117 points.
Howard (11-12, 7-4 MEAC) was led by Sydni Johnson's game-high 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Te'Shya Heslip recorded 13 points and Erin Blaine added 12 points. Sarah Edmond came off the bench to dish out a game-high eight assists to go with a team-high eight rebounds and seven points.
The Lady Bears (5-19, 3-8 MEAC) scored the first eight points of the game and held a 19-8 lead, following a layup by
Janessa Fauntroy with 4:05 left in the first quarter. Morgan's lead would be cut to seven points at 23-16 at the end of the quarter.
Howard, which was coming off a huge win on Saturday at rival Hampton, appeared to still be in Virginia, until the second quarter. The Lady Bison would shake off the rust, scoring 10 straight points to even the score at 33 all, after a basket by Heslip with 2:41 left in second quarter.
The Lady Bison would then close out the quarter scoring the final seven points to cap off a 17-2 spurt and take a 40-35 lead into the locker room.
Morgan State returned to work in the second half and put together an 18-4 run to take a 53-44 lead, after
Jihayah Chavis completed a three-point play with 4:53 remaining.
But the Lady Bison would again respond, this time using a 12-2 spurt to close out the third quarter and take a 56-55 advantage. Howard upped its lead to five points (60-55) on back-to-back baskets by Johnson with 7:28 left in the contest.
That's when the excitement began. Morgan State countered with eight straight points to take a 63-60 lead with 3:20 to play. Howard reclaimed the lead on consecutive baskets by Johnson and Williams drained a three for Morgan to give the guests a 66-64 advantage with 1:55 remaining.
Zuri White added two free throws, as the Lady Bears went up 68-64 with 1:30 to play.
Heslip and the Lady Bison would not go away, as she knocked down a three-pointer and then followed with a layup to give the hosts the lead back, 69-68 with 48 seconds left. Heslip then scored on a layup to put Howard up 71-69 with 25 seconds remaining.
Jayde Duncan scored on a put back layup to even the score at 71 all with 7.7 left in the game.
Johnson would get fouled and made just the first of two free throws to put the Lady Bison up 72-71 with 2.8 seconds left.
Williams would grab the rebound and got fouled with .4 seconds remaining, setting the stage for the dramatic finish with her two free throws.
Morgan State would finish the game shooting 90% (10-of-11) from the free throw line.
Morgan State will host the Savannah State Lady Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. at Hill Field House. Savannah State won the first meeting this season, 66-62 in overtime on Jan. 21 in Savannah, Ga.
