BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 9, 2017)-The Lady Bears return home after a week off to host Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game this Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at Hill Field House. It will be the first of two meetings between the two teams in a nine-day span.
BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (3-19, 1-8 MEAC) is coming off a 44-42 victory over North Carolina Central (2/4). The win ended a season-long 13-game losing streak, as well as an 11-game MEAC losing skid dating back to last season.
Ivy Harrington came off the bench to score a team-high eight points, while
Braennan Farrar also added eight points.
Tykyrah Williams and
Chelsea Mitchell added seven points.
Zuri White pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Farrar is scoring a team-leading 12.1 points per game, while Williams is adding 10 points per outing. Williams and White are both averaging 5.6 rebounds per game.
HORNET STINGERS: Delaware State (3-21, 2-9 MEAC) enters the game on a three-game losing skid, following a 69-61 loss at Florida A&M (2/6). Mikah Aldridge scored a team-high 13 points and Gennell Addison came off the bench to score 11. NaJai Pollard recoded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Pollard leads the Hornets in scoring with a team-best 18.4 points and team-leading 9.8 rebounds. Aldridge is totaling 13.5 points.
MSU VS. DSU SERIES NOTES: Delaware State leads the all-time series, 40-33. Morgan State has won the last three meetings, including last season's lone contest, 56-49 in Baltimore, Md. (1/9/16).
NEXT UP: Morgan State will travel to the most powerful city in the country, the Nation's Capital, when it takes on Beltway rival Howard on Monday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.
MOVING UP: Braennan Farrar scored eight points in the win over North Carolina Central (2/4), giving her 1,095 points for her career. Farrar, who ranks 11th all-time at Morgan State, is now 33 points away from passing Carla Thomas (1,117 points from 1984-87) for 10th-place.
13 STRAIGHT AND COUNTING: The Lady Bears' season-long 13-game losing streak came to an end, following a 44-42 victory over current losing streak reached a season-long 13 games, following their 61-26 loss to Florida A&M (1/30). The streak surpasses the five-game losing skid Morgan State had earlier in the season and is the longest losing skid for the program since the 2013-14 squad lost 15 consecutive games.
IT TAKES A THEIF: The Lady Bears have recorded 242 steals as a team in 22 games played thus far. Last season Morgan State recorded 249 steals in 30 games. Breannan Farrar leads the way with a team-best 51, while
Tykyrah Williams has 33 steals.
Chelsea Mitchell,
Jihayah Chavis and
Jayde Duncan are adding 28, 26 and 25 steals, respectively.
MEAC STREAK COMES TO AN END: The Lady Bears picked up their first MEAC victory of the season with a 44-42 victory over North Carolina Central (2/4) at Hill Field House. Prior to the victory, Morgan State had dropped its last 11 straight MEAC regular season contests, dating back to the last three games from the 2015-16 season. Ironically Morgan State's previous regular season MEAC victory also came against North Carolina Central (2/20/16), a 66-55 victory at home.
SEE YOU SOON: Morgan State and Delaware State will meet twice this season in a span of nine days. Following this afternoon's contest, the two will close out their regular season series on Monday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall in Dover, Del.
LADY BEARS ASSIST ORANGEBURG COMMUNITY: During the Lady Bears' trip to Orangeburg, SC (1/22-23), the team took some time out to collect and donate toiletries to go towards helping a total of 10 families get back on their feet after they were recently displaced when the Roosevelt Gardens apartment complex caught fire a week earlier in the Orangeburg area.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Morgan State currently ranks 30th in the nation in turnover margin at 4.73 per game. DePaul sits ahead of the Lady Bears at 29th at 4.80. Lamar leads the nation at 9.55 per contest. Morgan State is also 45th in the nation in scoring defense, holding its opponents to 58 points per outing.
