BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 4, 2017)-It's been said that eventually all good things come to an end. Fortunately for the Morgan State Lady Bears, remaining unbeaten at home for the time being is still intact.
Morgan State (6-3) had three players score in double figures Monday evening and forced 20 turnovers out of Florida International (FIU), as the Lady Bears defeated the visiting Panthers, 62-51 in a non-conference game at Hill Field House.
The victory evened the all-time series with FIU at 1-1, while extending the Lady Bears' home winning streak to six straight dating back to last season. The win was also extended Morgan State's season-long winning streak to four straight.
However, what did come to an end was Lexus Spears' three-game streak of scoring 20 points or more. Spears would still finish with a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while recording three steals and two blocks. Tykyrah Williams played a complete game, adding 14 points, a game-high nine rebounds, a game-high five assists, three steals and two blocks. Kayla Horn came off the bench to score 10 points, as the Lady Bears closed out the 2017 home schedule with a perfect 5-0 mark. They will not play another home game until Jan. 3, 2018.
FIU (2-7), which dropped all three games on its Washington, D.C. and Baltimore road trip, was led by Kiandre'a Pound's game-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Callie Cavanaugh scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had both of the Panther's blocked shots. Carbria Lee came off the bench to add 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.Â
The Lady Bears never trailed in the game and turned a one-point (16-15) game in the second quarter into a 13-point (38-25) halftime advantage with the help of a 12-4 run over the span of five minutes. Morgan State's lead would grow to as much as 17 points, when Aunesha Williams scored on back-to-back baskets to start the third quarter and give the Lady Bears a 42-25 lead 1:15 into the quarter. Â
FIU held a 46-38 rebounding advantage over Morgan State and connected on 13-of-18 (72 percent) from the free throw line. Morgan State shot just eight free throws and made three for 37 percent. The Lady Bears scored 34 points in the paint, while FIU had 14 points.Â
Morgan State will travel to Huntington, W.Va. to take on Marshall on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at Cam Henderson Center. Marshall (2-5) is coming off a 64-59 loss at home to Southern Illinois (12/2). Marshall leads the all-time series, 2-0. Last season the Thundering Herd defeated Morgan State, 62-43 in Huntington.
