Spears, Lady Bears Roll Past Central Connecticut State, 61-41

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Nov. 29, 2017)-Fresh off of picking up its first Division I victory of the season with a win over Mount St. Mary's of the Northeast Conference (NEC), Morgan State picked up its first road win of the season, following a 61-41 non-conference victory on Wednesday evening over Central Connecticut State (CCSU), also out of the NEC. The game was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
 
Morgan State (4-3) matched its season-long winning streak of two straight with the victory, while going a perfect 2-0 this season against NEC opponents.
 
Three days after scoring a career-high 22 points in the win over Mount St. Mary's, Morgan State senior Lexus Spears went back to work finishing with a game-high 22 points against Central Connecticut State. Spears would add a game-high eight rebounds and had three blocks in the win, giving her a combined 44 points, 22 rebounds, two steals and seven blocks in back-to-back games against NEC opposition.
 
Jihayah Chavis scored 12 points, including 2-of-3 shooting from three-point range and Braennan Farrar added eight points, eight rebounds, a game-high six assists and a game-high four steals.
 
Morgan State outscored the Blue Devils 42-14 in the paint and forced 25 CCSU turnovers, turning them into 24 points. The Blue Devils held a 27-10 advantage over Morgan State in bench scoring.
 
Emma McCamus came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line to lead CCSU, which fell to 0-6 on the season. Andi Lydon scored eight points and had five rebounds, while Brianna Jacobs came off the bench to grab a team-leading six rebounds to go with six points.
 
Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter, as it was nearly six minutes into the game before Adre'onia Coleman hit a jumper to give Morgan State a 2-0 lead with 4:08 remaining. The hosts would use a mini 5-0 run over the next minute to take their largest lead of the game at 5-2 with 3:08 remaining.
 
Morgan State would reclaim the lead for good at 6-5 on a layup by Tykyrah Williams, which was part of an 11-0 run by the Lady Bears to close out the quarter and give the guests a 13-5 lead. The Lady Bears would score the first six points of the second quarter to extend their run to 18-0 and increase their lead to 20-5. Morgan State would take a 31-17 lead into the lockerroom.
 
The visitors began the second half going on a 12-4 run to take their largest lead of the game (22 points) when Coleman scored on a layup to give Morgan State a 43-21 advantage with 3:28 left in the third.
 
The Lady Bears will be off until Saturday, Dec. 2, when they welcome New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) to Hill Field House. Tip-off is at 2:30 p.m. The Highlanders (0-7) dropped a 67-49 decision at home to LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday.
