Lady Bears Drop Puerto Rico Clasico Contest Against Iowa, 90-46

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Nov. 22, 2017)-Iowa's Megan Gustafson was one of four Hawkeyes to score in double figures, as Iowa defeated Morgan State, 90-46 in the opener of the Puerto Rico Clasico at Cardinal Gibbons High School. It was the first meeting between the two schools.
 
Gustafson would shot 8-of-11 from the floor to finish with a game-high 18 points and she pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Hannah Stewart came off the bench to score 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Chase Coley (4-for-4 shooting, eight rebounds) and Alexis Sevillian, each added 11 points.
 
Iowa improved to 5-0 for the third time in the last four years, while Morgan State dropped to 2-3.
 
The Hawkeyes shot 64 percent (34-of-53) from the floor and held a 49-22 rebounding advantage over the Lady Bears. Iowa connected on 3-of-10 (30 percent) from three-point range and converted 19-of-29 from the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bears took their only lead of the game on a three-pointer by Tykyrah Williams to put Morgan State ahead, 3-2 with 9:04 left in the opening period. Williams would later hit another trey to even the score at 6-6 at the 6:48 mark. Morgan State would trail 14-10 after a quarter of play.
 
Kayla Horn would begin the second quarter with a layup and added the free throw to complete a three-point play to bring the Lady Bears within 14-13 with 9:44 remaining in the period. That would be as close as Morgan State would get, as the Hawkeyes would close out the half on a 12-0 spurt to take a 35-17 halftime lead.  
 
Morgan State shot 21 percent (15-of-70) for the game, including 6-of-27 (22 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Bears did convert 10-of-11 (90.0 percent) from the free throw line. Morgan State also forced 21 turnovers out of Iowa.
 
Braennan Farrar led the Lady Bears with 13 points, while Williams finished with 11 points. Lexus Spears and Farrar each pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
 
Iowa will play two more games in the Puerto Rico Clasico, starting with a contest against Charlotte on Thursday, Nov. 23, before wrapping up against Elon on Saturday, Nov. 25. Morgan State will return home to host Mount Saint Mary's on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.
