Lady Bears Too Much For Cheyney In Home Opener, 123-53

Morgan State Sets School Record With 123 Points

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 13, 2017)-Hill Field House has seen a lot of upgrades during the offseason. Everything from a newly designed court, video boards, lighting and a center hung scoreboard.

On Monday evening the Lady Bears got to test out the scoreboard and lit it up in their home opener against non-conference opponent Cheyney, as they handed the Wolves a 123-53 thumping. It was the first meeting between the two teams since Morgan State defeated the Wolves, 74-43 during the 1992-93 season. Division II Cheyney still leads the all-time series, 10-6.

There were several notables about Monday's record setting performance. The 123 points are the most points ever scored by a Morgan State women's team, surpassing the previous school record of 115 points against the University of Baltimore (1/17/83). The 70-point victory is the second largest win in school history behind an 82-point (102-20) victory over Coppin State (2/13/77). The 49 made field goals are the most by a Lady Bears' team since the program moved to the Division I level for the 1983-84 season.

Seniors Braennan Farrar and Tykyrah Williams each shot 10-of-11 from the floor and knocked down all three of their three-pointer attempts. Fellow senior Lexus Spears scored 12 points on 5- of-6 shooting. Tyler Miller came off the bench to score 13 points and Jihayah Chavis added 12 points in a reserve role.

The Lady Bears (1-1) shot 71 percent (49-of-69) from the floor, including 12-of-16 (75 percent) from three-point range. Farrar and Chavis each had eight assists, as the Lady Bears recorded 28 as a team. Morgan State also forced 33 Cheyney turnovers, 20 of which were steals.

Morgan State led 71-14 at the intermission.

Cheyney (0-3) was led by Octavia Hawkins, who came off the bench to score 13 points. K'viah Breazeale also came off the bench and added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range.

The Wolves shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) for the game and hit 8-of-17 (47 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.

Morgan State will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 15 when they take on Division II and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) member, Lincoln University (Pa.). Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at Hill Field House. This will be the eighth meeting between the two teams with the Lady Bears holding a 6-1 series advantage.

Lincoln (1-1) and Morgan State last met during the 2014-15 campaign with the Lions shocking Morgan State, 94-86 in overtime on Nov. 15, 2014.
