N.C. A&T Holds Off Morgan State’s Comeback Attempt

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 16, 2017)-Charnise Tyler came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and three of her North Carolina A&T teammates also scored in double figures, as the visiting Lady Aggies held off a late charge by Morgan State for a 67-62 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory on Monday evening at Hill Field House.

The win marked the first MEAC road victory of the season for NC A&T (6-11, 2-2 MEAC), which also earned its sixth straight win over Morgan State to improve to 38-21 all-time in the series.

Aliyah Kilpatrick scored 11 points and had a game-high eight assists, while Michelle Fitzgerald and Alexus Lessears each scored 10 points in the win.

The Lady Bears (2-15, 0-4 MEAC) were led by Braennan Farrar, who finished with a game-high 19 points, while Tykyrah Williams added 12 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Ivy Harrington came off the bench and provided a spark for the Lady Bears, finishing with six points on 3-for-3 shooting, while Zuri White and Chelsea Mitchell each added six points on 3-of-7 shooting. White also had six rebounds and finished with a team-high three assists.

For Morgan State the loss marked yet another close and heartbreaking one for the Lady Bears, who have now suffered a season-long nine consecutive defeats.

Trailing 32-25 at the half, the Lady Bears watched the visiting Lady Aggies use a 13-2 spurt to take a 45-27 lead with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Morgan State got a three-pointer by Williams to end the drought and Farrar added another three-pointer to cut the NC A&T lead to 14 points at 47-33 with 1:54 remaining in the quarter. But the guests would use a 6-1 spurt capped off by a layup from Kala Green to give the Lady Aggies their largest lead of the game (19 points) at 53-34 with 46 seconds remaining. The lead would be 18 points (55-37) at the end of the third.

The Lady Bears, who all season-long have had trouble getting consistent scoring, began to wake up in the fourth quarter and make the game interesting. Down 61-45 (16 points), the Lady Bears played perhaps their best basketball of the season in the final 6:39.

Farrar knocked down a three-pointer with 6:14 left in the game to trigger 10 straight points by the Lady Bears in part of a 17-2 run which took up just under six minutes. Jayde Duncan hit two free throws to bring the hosts within 61-55 with 2:57 to play.

After a free throw by Fitzgerald gave the Lady Aggies a 63-57 advantage with 2:03 left, the Lady Bear then scored the next five points, capped off by a layup by Williams with 24.6 left in the game to make it a 63-62 NC A&T lead.

The Lady Aggies however would seal the deal at the charity line, as Kilpatrick converted on four straight free throws to secure the 67-62 victory.

NC A&T would take 33 free throws in the game, making 21 of them for 63 percent. Morgan State went to the line 19 times and made 11 for 57.9 percent.
