Morgan State beats Coppin State 74-72 in OT

BALTIMORE, Md. -- In front of the homecoming crowd at Coppin State's Physical Education Complex, the Morgan State Bears overcame a seven-point deficit late in the second half to defeat cross-town rival Coppin State 74-72 in overtime to extend their winning streak to three this Saturday evening.

MSU's Andre Horne, who led the Bears with 19 points, hit the two biggest three-pointers of the game at just the perfect time for his team.

With 47 seconds left, Morgan State trailed Coppin 64-57. Then the magic started to take place.

"Once it got close, I told my coaches that we needed a game like this. We didn't play with enough energy," said Morgan State head coach Todd Bozeman. "Towards the end of the game, they decided to dig in."

Rasean Simpson hit a three-pointer with 38 seconds left to draw within 64-60. Then he was fouled by Coppin's Josh Treadwell  on a rebounding attempt with 10 seconds left and connected on a pair of free throws to draw the Bears within 64-62.

Coppin State's Terry Harris Jr., who led all scorers with 20 points, connected on the first of two free throw attempts with 8.9 seconds in regulation. Then after Harris missed the second free throw, Simpson rebounded the ball and fed it to a wide open Horne, who nailed his first three-pointer of the night from the left side of the key, tying the game at 65, sending the packed PEC crowd into delirium with 1.6 seconds left.

The game ended up going into overtime and Morgan knew they had to make the first big move to try to set the pace in that frame.  But it didn't happen until there was under a minute left and MSU was up 69-68. Donte Pretlow found a open Horne, who made a second three-pointer, this time from the right side of the key, to give the Bears a much needed cushion with 58 seconds to go.

"I'm happy for them because it gave them an example of if they kept fighting through, then things can work out," said Bozeman.

But the Bears weren't quite out of the woods yet.  The Eagles' Mufaro Melinda converted a huge lay-up to help draw them within 73-72 with 32 seconds left. However, Horne hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to 74-72 with 28 seconds left.

Morgan State (8-20, 6-9 MEAC) had their chance to salt away the game a little later on, but Philip Carr didn't convert his two free throw opportunities. That left the door wide open for Coppin late. However, Coppin's Keith Shivers three-point shot from the top of the key missed everything at the buzzer and MSU got away with the huge victory.

Morgan State comes home on Thursday for Senior Night at Hill Field House when they host UMES in the regular season finale for both teams. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm.
