BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 20, 2016)-For the second time this season the Lady Bears entered a game in sole possession of first place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) standings. And for the second time, they would drop out of first in the very next game, this time falling to visiting North Carolina A&T, 65-55 on Monday evening at Hill Field House.
Â
With the loss, Morgan State (12-14, 10-4 MEAC) fell to a two-way tie for second-place with Bethune-Cookman, while N.C. A&T (14-10, 10-3 MEAC) jumped into a two-way tie with Hampton for first in the MEAC standings.
Â
Tykyrah Williams led Morgan State with a game-high 19 points and added a team-high eight rebounds in the loss. Lexus Spears finished with 14 points and five rebounds. But the story of the game was Morgan State's Braennan Farrar, the fourth leading scorer in the MEAC at 14.7 points. Farrar, who wouldn't check into the game until the final 47.5 seconds of the first quarter, would be held scoreless on 0-for-11 shooting, including 0-for-5 from three-point range.
Â
Roughly a little over an hour before tip-off, Farrar was ruled out of the game, due to an insurance billing situation, which was not properly resolved. The incident would eventually get rectified with no wrong doing on Farrar's part and she was cleared to play. After missing the first 9 minutes and 12.5 seconds of the game, Farrar would finally enter the contest. Unfortunately, she never got to warm up prior to the game. As a result, she didn't get into the flow of the game and had her worst outing as a Lady Bear.
Â
North Carolina A&T, winners of seven of its last eight games, got a team-high 13 points and game-high four assists from Kala Green, while Dana Brown added 11 points for the Lady Aggies, who were making their first appearance in Hill Field House in four seasons. Courtney Powell pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Â
The Lady Bears held a 5-0 lead, and led 7-2, before the visiting Lady Aggies went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage. Morgan State would score the final three points of the quarter to even the score at 10-10 after one.
Â
The hosts reclaimed the lead at the 9:50 mark of the second quarter when Farrar connected on two free throws to give Morgan State a 12-10 lead. Morgan upped its lead to 23-19 with 2:43 to play in the second quarter after back-to-back baskets by Ivy Harrington. But A&T would close out the half scoring the final five points to take a 24-23 lead at the intermission.
Â
The Lady Aggies, winners of five straight over Morgan State, would break a 35 all tie in the third quarter by going on a 7-3 run over the final 2:13, capped off by a three-point by Brown to give the guests a 42-38 lead after three quarters.
Â
The teams would baskets until two free throws by White evened the score at 46 with 7:23 left to play. The Lady Aggies would quickly up their lead to five points at 51-46 with 4:18 to play. Morgan State, however had one last run in them, using a 5-0 run, capped off by two free throws from Williams to tie the score at 51 all with 3:13 remaining in the contest. It would be the seven tie of the game.
Â
Unfortunately for the Lady Bears, they would never reclaim the lead. The guests would close the door with a 14-4 spurt the rest of the way for the victory.
Â
The Lady Bears struggled this evening from beyond the three-point arc, shooting 12.5 percent on 2-of-16 shooting. Morgan State also shot 61.9 percent from the charity line, going 13-of-21.
Â
