Bears drop final non-conference game, fall to Cal State Northridge 82-61

Phillip Carr scores career-high 25 points with 11 rebounds

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --  Kendall Smith scored 19 points Cal State Northridge snapped a four game losing streak by posting an 82-61 win over Morgan State on Thursday at The Matadome. 

Smith was one of five Matadors (4-9) to finish in double-figures. Tavrion Dawson hit 8-of-10 shots and finished with 16 points, while Aaron parks and Rakim Lubin finished with 12 each. Darin Johnson added 10 points and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Morgan State falls to 3-10 overall and has lost four straight.

Cal State Northridge scored the first eight points and led 17-6 after seven minutes.The Matadors shot a blistering 55 percent from the field, while Morgan State shot 26 percent, to forge a 45-25 lead.

The Bears cut the lead twice to 17, but could get no closer. Cal State Northridge led 71-48 when Darin Johnson scored a layup with 5:59 to play.

Phillip Carr led the Bears with a career-high 25 points on 8-of-20 shooting and hauled down 11 rebounds with two blocked shots. It marked the his sixth double-double of the season. Freshman forward David Syfax chipped in 11 points with six rebounds, and senior forward Kyle Thomas had 10 points and two steals.

Morgan State was outscored by a 60-22 margin in points in the paint, including a 16-2 margin in fastbreak points.

Cal State Northridge did not make a 3-pointer (0-3), but finished the game by shooting 50 percent (31-54) and had 21 assists on 31 baskets. The Bears shot 30 percent (22-73) and went 5-of-19 from 3-point territory.

The Matadors improved to 4-0 in the series matchup versus Morgan State.

Next Up: The Bears open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play when they host the Norfolk State Spartans on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
