Bears Withstand Late Surge, Drop Wilmington 88-73

BALTMORE, Md. -- Playing their third game in seven days, Morgan State captured its first win of the season with an 88-73 victory in a hard-fought battle with Division II opponent Wilmington.

Junior forward Phillip Carr (8-11 FG, 13 rebounds) and freshman David Syfax led five in double figures with 21 points apiece for the Bears, who raced out to leads of 15-3 and 41-20 before taking a 47-30 advantage into the locker room at the half.

The Wildcats (3-1) clawed their way back into contention in the final period, however, twice pulling within six points.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek – who finished with 23 points, six rebounds and five assists – knocked down a 3-pointer with 8:37 to play that tightened things up at 62-56, and it was still a ballgame at 70-62 with just over five minutes left when the Bears strung together a 16-6 run to pull away, 86-68 with 1:38 remaining.

Nick Richards registered 15 points and Drew Johnson 11 (3-5 from deep) for the Cats, who were outshot (53%-36%) but fared better on the boards (47-41, including 35-24 on the offensive end).

Ultimately, the difference was turnovers, as the Bears outscored their guests 27-12 on miscues, matching the 15-point final separation on the scoreboard.

The Bears (1-2) return to Hill Field House on Saturday, Nov. 19 for a non-conference meeting with the Campbell Camels. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
