EMMITSBURG, Md. (Nov. 15, 2016)-Mount St. Mary's Caroline Hummell scored a career-high 28 points and added a game-high 14 rebounds to record her second straight double-double to start the season, as the host Mountaineers defeated visiting Morgan State, 65-50 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Knott Arena.
Mount St. Mary's (1-1) evened up the all-time series at 7-7, while ending a two-game losing skid to Morgan State. Prior to Tuesday's game, the two teams had not played since Nov. 28, 2007, a 58-53 road win by Morgan State.
The loss also spoiled Morgan State's season opener, as well as the return of Morgan State interim head coach Ed Davis to a sideline as a head coach in five seasons.
Hummell finished the night shooting 8-of-12 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. Mikal Johnson contributed 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and knocked down five three-pointers for The Mount, who shot 8-of-20 (40 percent) from three-point range for the game.
The Lady Bears (0-1), who never led in the game, missed their first 19 shots to start the contest. The host Mountaineers used a 12-0 spurt during Morgan State's drought and held a 21-4 lead after the first quarter. Morgan State's lone points would come on four free throws from Breannan Farrar.
A three-pointer by Jihayah Chavis with 9:02 to play in the second quarter, finally ended the Lady Bear's field goal drought and made it a 21-7 Mount St. Mary's advantage. The host Mountaineers would take a 31-15 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Morgan State offense was starting to come around in the third quarter, but the Lady Bears could not get over the hump, as Mount St. Mary's would respond. Morgan State cut the deficit to nine points at 41-32 on a layup from Ivy Harrington with 29 seconds left in the quarter, but Johnson responded with a three-pointer to give the hosts a 44-32 lead after three quarters of play.
Trailing 50-38 with under 6:30 remaining in the contest, the Lady Bears put together a 9-2 run capped off by a layup from Chelsea Mitchell with 3:15 to play and cut the score to 52-47. But the Mount would not let Morgan State get any closer, as on the ensuing possession Johnson would drain her fourth three-pointer to put the host up eight points to trigger an 8-1 spurt in part of a 13-3 run to close out the game.
Farrar led the Lady Bears with 14 points, while Tykyrah Williams pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and led the team with a game-high four steals. As a team the Lady Bears forced 23 Mount St. Mary's turnovers with 13 coming by way of steals.
The guests finished the game shooting 23.4 percent (15-of-60) from the floor, while the Mount shot 41.7 percent (20-of-48) for the game.
Morgan State will now prepare for its home opener this Thursday, Nov. 17, when it hosts Washington Adventist at 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. This will be the third straight meeting between the two teams with Morgan State holding a 2-0 lead. Last season Morgan State defeated the Shock, 74-36 in the season opener on Nov. 15 in Baltimore.
