HOUSTON, Texas -- Rob Gray Jr. scored 22 points and Devin Davis added 19 points to send Houston past Morgan State 93-52 on Friday night in the season opener for both squads.
Kyle Meyer made one of two free throws early to make it 11-0 and the rout was on. Morgan State got on the board with 14:54 before halftime with two free throws.
Later, Gray made two free throws and nailed a 3 to push the lead to 28-5 with 10:04 left.
The Cougars connected on 45.9 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes and limited the Bears to only 20.8 percent in taking a 45-19 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, Houston connected on nearly 60 percent of its shots and was led by Damyean Dotson, who scored all 13 of his points in the final 20 minutes.
MSU guard Tiwian Kendley led the Bears with 18 points in his Bear debut, while 2016 Preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection Phillip Carr finished with 16 points and tied with center Alex Ennis for team-high honors with seven rebounds.
Morgan State finished the night by converting 79.2 percent (19-24) from the free throw line, but hit just 15-of-50 (30 percent) from the field. Houston shot 52.2 percent (36-69) and was 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Bears return home to host cross-town opponent Towson on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hill Field House.
