Lady Bears Drop Doubleheader Opener to Delaware, 1-0

NEWARK, Del. (March 18, 2015)-The host Delaware Blue Hens broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning to score the game's lone run in a 1-0 non-conference victory over Morgan State in Game 1 of a doubleheader at UD Softball Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Delaware pitcher Carolyn Szymanski led off the inning with a triple to right center. Morgan State pitcher Amy Begg would get the next batter to ground out, before walking the third batter she faced in the inning. Begg then regrouped and tallied a strikeout, but a wild pitch would allow Morgan Schroll, who pinch ran for Szymanski, to score from third for the 1-0 lead.

That run would prove to be all the Blue Hens would need, as they improved to 12-8 on the season. Morgan State would suffer its third straight loss and fell to 1-13 on the season.

The game was a battle of the two pitchers, as hits were a premium. The Blue Hens finished the game with three hits and two errors, while Morgan State had two hits and two errors.

Szymanski totaled seven strikeouts in seven innings of work and had two walks for the Blue Hens.

Begg also recorded seven strikeouts and allowed two walks in six innings of work for the Lady Bears.
