Fourth Quarter Scoring Drought Dooms Lady Bears In Navy Classic Opener, 54-36

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 27, 2016)-Keyora Wharry scored 10 points and Jamie Patrick added nine, to lead Colorado State (CSU) to a 54-36 victory in the opener of the Navy Classic on Friday afternoon at Alumni Hall.

Fellow starters Alana Arias and Ellen Nystrom added eight points apiece and Elin Gustavsson finished with six to help the Rams improve to 4-1 on the season.

Morgan State (1-4) was led by Braennan Farrar, who scored a game-high 11 points, while Chelsea Mitchell came off the bench to add nine points and two steals. However it wasn't enough for the Lady Bears, who dropped their fourth consecutive game this season.

The Lady Bears had overcome an 11-point deficit (28-17) in the third quarter and pulled within 34-32, following a free by Lexus Spears to cap off a 15-6 spurt by the Lady Bears with 9:42 to play in the fourth. Morgan State trailed 38-36 after a jumper by Mitchell with 7:14 left in the contest. Unfortunately, that would be the last field goal and points in the game for the Lady Bears. Colorado State would close out the game with a 16-0 spurt for the 54-36 victory.

Morgan State, which led for a total of nine minutes in the game, jumped out to a 7-0 advantage, before the Rams got on the board with a three-pointer from Patrick, which triggered a mini 5-0 run by CSU to end the scoring in the period.

The Rams would score the first nine points to start the second period to increase their lead to 14-7. Tykyrah Williams drained a deep three-pointer as the shot clock expired to end CSU's 14-0 run with 6:09 left in the half to make it a 14-10 game. Williams' three-pointer also ended a scoring drought for the Lady Bears, whose last points came at the 4:26 mark of the first quarter.
The two teams would trade 4-0 spurts for the remainder of the first half, and the Rams would hold a 22-14 lead at the break.

CSU increased its lead to 28-17 after a layup by Wharry, but the Lady Bears would wake up. A three-pointer by Mitchell triggered a 10-0 run by the Lady Bears, where Farrar scored the final seven points in the run to bring Morgan State within 28-27 with 3:57 to play in the third. The Rams would hold a 34-31 lead after three periods.

Twice the Lady Bears would get within two points in the fourth quarter, the last coming at 38-36 with 7:14 to play. That's when the Rams locked in and closed out the game and any chance of a Morgan State victory.

The Lady Bears shot 23 percent (14-of-61) for the game, including 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from three-point range. The Rams also struggled from three-point range, connecting on 12 percent (2-of-16), while shooting 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the floor.

CSU forced 18 Morgan State turnovers, while recording 12 steals with Wharry and Nystrom each collecting three. The Rams would score 21 points off of Morgan turnovers and held a 34-12 advantage in points in the paint.

Morgan State will conclude the Navy Classic on Saturday with a game against the loser of the Navy versus Siena contest. Tip-off will be at 3:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
