Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 21, 2015)–Freshmen Erika Steeves and Shayna Mehta each tallied double-doubles, and senior Jordin Alexander compiled 17 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists to lead Brown University women's basketball to a 72-45 win over Morgan State University on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The host Bears (4-0) opened the second quarter with a 14-0 run and scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to pull away from the visiting Lady Bears (1-2). Brown starts the season 4-0 for the first time since the 1990-91 season. The team also began 4-0 in the 1974-75 campaign.
"I think we did really well today. We probably executed better in this game – from start to finish at both ends – than in any of our previous games," Brown head coach Sarah
Behn said. "I do see the progress coming – I'm really optimistic. We have a lot of things that we need to work on, but today we followed the game plan really well."
Steeves notched her second double-double of the season with a season-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point distance to go with 11 rebounds. Mehta logged her first collegiate double-double behind 11 points and a season-high 10 rebounds from her guard position.
Alexander shot 5-of-7 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line, tied her career high with seven boards, and set a career best with seven assists while junior Rebecca Musgrove registered eight points, four rebounds, and three steals.
Brown took an 8-7 lead after the first quarter and extended that edge to 22-7 with their 14-0 run with 6:10 to go in the half. Musgrove paced the Bears with six points during the streak, and Mehta connected on a 3-pointer.
The hosts held a 33-13 lead at the half, closing the second quarter on an 11-2 burst, including four points from sophomore Kennedy Martin.
Brown remained in control with a 51-32 advantage through three quarters and netted 10 consecutive points from the end of the third to the 8:35 mark of the fourth to pull ahead 59-32. Alexander scored seven points during the run, and Steeves hit a triple. Morgan State pulled within 59-40 with an 8-0 run, but the Bears responded with a 9-0 run, including two treys from Steeves, to gain a 68-40 lead with 2:10 to play.
Brown improved to 4-0 all-time vs. Morgan State and held the visitors to 27.7 percent shooting from the field in the game. The hosts out-rebounded the visitors, 50-35, in the contest.
Danielle Robinson led Morgan State with 14 points, while
Lexus Spears added seven.
Ivy Harrington finished with a team-high five rebounds to go with six points.
The Lady Bears will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the No. 25 Syracuse Orange in a non-conference contest on Monday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
