CAYCE, S.C. (April 17, 2014)-
The No. 1 seeded Morgan State Bears were upset by No. 4 seed Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.

In doubles action, the Bears earned a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point by capturing wins at the number one and three positions. MSU's Duk Young-Park and Evan Ward dropped Bethune's Gibert Rotich and Greg Almeida, 8-4. Dmitry Borodkin and Jannick Tash teamed up to top Diego Garavito and Santiago Lobelo, 8-6.

But the Wildcats rallied during singles play by racking up victories.

Morgan State's Evan Ward was defeated, 6-2, 6-3, against Santiago Lobelo at No. 2 singles, but MSU answered when Joshua Abraham posted a 6-4, 6-3 hard fought win over Bethune's Gilbert Rotich. It turned out to be the Bears only victory.

It was downhill from that point, as the Bears suffered losses at four, five and six positions.

With the win, No. 4 Bethune-Cookman (6-17) advances to play No. 2 seed Norfolk State (13-6) on Friday, April 18. The MEAC Championship will be played on Saturday, April 20 at noon.

Morgan State, who was the top seed in the championship out of the MEAC North Division, finished the season with a 4-12 record.

"I feel that the building blocks of a good program are here at Morgan," said MSU coach Holcomb-Jones.

"We had some great landmark moments this year. Now its time for the team to reflect on the season for a day, and then get back to work and win the offseason so we can come back with a stronger team next year and take our program to the next level."
