BALTIMORE, Md. – The Morgan State University men's tennis team defeated Howard, 4-1, on Sunday to clinch the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division title and No. 1 North seed in the MEAC Championship. It marks Morgan State's third straight North Division title under head coach
Sean Holcomb-Jones.
The Bears improved to 4-11 overall and 4-0 in MEAC play, while Howard fell to 2-15 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Junior
Duk Young-Park posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over William Jones in number 1 singles to lead the Bears.
Joshua Abraham recorded a 6-3, 7-6 win against Myron Davis at number 3.
Jannick Tash completed the singles victory by winning 6-3, 6-1.
Morgan State battled to win the doubles point. The Bears No. 1 tandem of
Duk Young-Park and
Evan Ward fell in close contest against Myron Davis and Ismael Kaouache. However,
Joshua Abraham and
Ty Abraham dropped William Jones and Laguna Foster, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles, and Dmitry Borodkin teamed-up with
Jannick Tash at No. 3 to seal the doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Nico Sorrell and Nile Kendall.
"To be able to show this level of consistency in our division is a decent accomplishment, but at this point in development of our program we have to do more," said Holcomb-Jones. "We have to make sure we get out of the first round in the MEAC Tournament, which we have been unable to do the last two years."
"To get the respect we deserve for the program, we have to start making championship runs with our men's program, not just divisional championships."
The Bears will resume action at the MEAC Championships in Cayce, S.C., on Friday, April 17. The tournament will last three days until April 19.
