BALTIMORE, Md. – The Morgan State men's tennis team opened up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a home victory. The Bears downed the Hampton Pirates 4-1 Friday afternoon at Morgan State's renovated tennis courts.
Morgan State snapped a four-match losing skid as the Bears captured its first win of the season, and the Pirates record dropped to 2-6.
"The guys stepped up big today, especially our freshman Josh Abraham," said MSU coach
Sean Holcomb-Jones. "He [Abraham] got his first collegiate win today by clinching a tight conference match for his team in a battle of preseason Divisional No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams."
"The seniors also showed maturity with Duk, Dmitry and Evan all winning convincingly."
In the No. 1 position,
Duk Young-Park outsted Advait Kirtane, 6-2, 6-2.
Evan Ward dropped Aleksandre Daviliandze, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 2 position.
One of the toughest matchups of the day pitted
Joshua Abraham versus Hampton's Josh McQueen. Abraham was able to pull out a hard fought 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Dmitry Borodkin dropped Henry Drakeford, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 6 position.
Morgan State returns to play on Tuesday, March 11 when they face Navy in Annapolis (Md.) in a non-conference tilt.
