Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker To Norfolk State, 64-63

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 8, 2014)-Norfolk State's Rachel Gordon grabbed her game-high 17th rebound off of a missed shot by teammate Rae Corbo, and despite an inadvertent sounding of the horn at the scorer's table, Gordon put back the game winning layup with 0.4 seconds remaining, to give the visiting Norfolk State Spartans a 64-63 come-from-behind victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Hill Field House.

With the win, Norfolk State (10-10, 6-3 MEAC) swept the season series from Morgan State, marking the first time in eight years that the Spartans won both games since the 2006 season.

Gordon, who rebound was her eighth offensive board of the game, finished with a team-high 19 points with her game winner to record a double-double. Corbo finished with 12 points, while Ebony Brown came off the bench and added 11 points.

For Morgan State (2-20, 0-9 MEAC), it was yet another heartbreaking loss for the Lady Bears team, that just can't catch a break. The loss was a season-long 13th straight for Morgan State and its seventh consecutive loss at home.

Tracey Carrington finished with a game-high 23 points and had seven rebounds in the loss. Carrington, who has scored 981 points in her career, is now 19 points shy of joining the 1,000-point club at Morgan State.

Danielle Forrest finished with 12 points and Simone Sampson added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears, who held a 34-31 lead at the intermission, extended their lead to 11 points (42-31) after an 8-0 run to start the second half. Forrest led the charge with a three-pointer and Robinson followed with a three of her own, before Sampson added a layup to finish the run.

Norfolk State used a 14-6 run over the next six minutes to pull within 48-45 after a jumper by Brown with 11:32 to play.

The hosts countered with an 8-1 spurt capped off by a trey from Forrest to give the Lady Bears a 10-point advantage (56-46) with 8:00 remaining in the contest.

But much like their first meeting in Norfolk, the Spartans would not go away. Norfolk State countered with an 11-2 run over the next 4:33 to pull within 58-57, following a layup by Corbo with 3:27 to play.

Morgan State would hold on to its lead, getting a layup from Sampson with 2:55 left to put the Lady Bears up 60-57, and held a one-point advantage at 63-62 after a jumper by Brown with 46.1 to play.

On the ensuing possession, Carrington went left toward the basket and missed the layup the Spartans' Quineshia Leonard grabbed the rebound and gave it to Corbo, who raced down the right side of the court in the other direction. In the process of Corbo's jumper, which misfired over the basket, the horn sounded inadvertently. Gordon, who grabbed control of the ball, appeared to be surprised with the early sounding of the horn, but kept playing and alertly laid the ball in basket with 0.4 to play for the win.

Norfolk State outrebounded the Lady Bears, 55-38 for the game and outscored Morgan State, 30-18 in the paint. The Spartans also held a 22-7 cushion over Morgan State in bench points and had an 8-0 advantage in fast break points.

Morgan State shot 18-of-54 (33 percent) from the floor, while the Spartans connected on 23-of-64 from the floor for 35.9 percent.

The Lady Bears will finally take on crosstown rival Coppin State for the first time this season, when the two square off on Monday, Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex on the Coppin State campus. The Eagles (11-11, 8-2 MEAC) are coming off an 80-64 win at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
