Hampton Defeats Lady Bears, 90-46

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 3, 2013)-Alyssa Bennett scored a game-high 22 points and had a team-high four steals to lead four Lady Pirates in double figures scoring, as Hampton defeated Morgan State, 90-46 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Hill Field House.

Hampton (18-4, 9-0 MEAC) also got 17 points apiece from Malia Tate-DeFreitas and Nicole Hamilton, who also each pulled down nine rebounds, while Kenia Cole added 15 points for Hampton, which has now won eight straight over Morgan State.

Morgan State (2-19, 0-8 MEAC) was led by Tracey Carrington, who finished with 13 points, and Ivy Harrington added 10 points for the Lady Bears, who have now dropped their last six consecutive games at home.

It took the Lady Pirates offense a little longer to get going than it did in their 54-point (99-45) win over Morgan State in the first meeting this season, but in the end Hampton cruised to its 39th straight MEAC victory, while securing its 25th consecutive road victory against conference opponents.

After a slow start from both teams, Hampton began to heat up with back-to-back three-pointers by Hamilton and Tate-DeFreitas. The Lady Pirates later used a 9-0 spurt to take an 18-6 lead. A basket by the Lady Bears' Dinah Jones ended the run, but the guests put together a 12-6 spurt to extend their lead to 32-14.

Hampton's hot shooting would cool off, as the Lady Pirates would go scoreless for nearly five minutes. However, Morgan State was only able to score four points during that stretch to pull within 32-18. That would be as close as the Lady Bears would get, as Hampton took a 39-22 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Pirates added to their lead, by using an 18-3 run over the course of four minutes to take a 32-point lead at 67-35 with 10:03 to play to all but seal the victory.

Hampton held a 53-32 rebounding advantage over Morgan State with Brielle Ward, Hamilton and Tate-DeFreitas all pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. Bennett added eight boards for the Lady Pirates.

Morgan State finished the game shooting 29 percent (14-of-47) from the field and connected on 16-of-25 (64 percent) free throws.

The Lady Pirates went 29-of-71 (40.8 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-20 (40 percent) from three-point range. Hampton also went 24-of-37 from the charity line for 64.9 percent.

The Lady Bears will conclude their three-game homestand on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they play host to the Norfolk State Spartans. Tip-off is scheduled  for 2 p.m. at Hill Field House.
