Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Feb. 17, 2014)-TeAmber Burke scored a team-high 15 points to lead six University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) players – including four starters – in double figures scoring, as the Lady Hawks defeated visiting Morgan State, 91-46 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at the Hytche Athletic Center on Monday evening.

The Lady Hawks improved to 7-16 overall and 3-8 in the MEAC, while Morgan State fell to 2-22, 0-11 in the MEAC.

UMES blew the game open by way of the its long range shooting, as six different Lady Hawks connected from beyond the three-point arc. Mariah McCoy scored 13 points, while connecting on 3-of-6 from three-point range, and Taylor Thompson came off the bench to score 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 three-pointers. Shawnee Sweeney also came off the bench and contributed 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from downtown for the Lady Hawks. Breonna Evans tallied 10 points and Taryana Kelly shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to finish with 10 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to help UMES send the Lady Bears to their 15th straight loss of the season.

The last time Morgan State and UMES met, the Lady Bears eliminated UMES in the opening round of the 2013 MEAC tournament. Prior to that, just two weeks earlier, Morgan State served up a 37-point (65-28) thumping in Baltimore (3/2), while limiting the Lady Hawks to just eight first half points.

Whether Monday's game was payback for last year or not, UMES tried its best to return the favor. As a team the Lady Hawks shot 57.6 percent from the floor on 34-of-59 shooting and were 50 percent (14-of-28) from three-point range.

Meanwhile, Morgan State shot 17-of-62 (27.4 percent) for the game and hit just 2-of-18 from the three-point arc for 11 percent. The Lady Bears did shot 83 percent from the charity stripe, going 10-of-12.

Morgan State's Tracey Carrington, who was held to just two points at the break, finished with a game-high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds to tie for game high honors. Dinah Jones added 10 points in the loss.

A basket by Morgan State's Ivy Harrington cut the UMES lead to 22-15 with 10:28 to play, but the host Lady Hawks would close out the half on a 22-4 spurt to take a 44-19 halftime advantage. UMES would limit the Lady Bears to just one field goal during that stretch.

Despite being held to just two points in the first stanza and going 0-for-6 shooting from the field, Carrington's two free throw attempts would be bittersweet for the junior guard out of Baltimore. With 5:40 remaining in the first half, Carrington stepped to the line and drained both attempts, giving her exactly 1,000 points for her career, thus making her the 11th member to reach the 1,000-point plateau on the Lady Bear charts.

The Lady Hawks outrebounded Morgan State, 46-29 for the game and also had 21 assists to just three for the Lady Bears.

Kelly recorded a game-high four blocked shots and Alexis Udoji added three blocks to lead the Lady Hawks, who finished with 10 blocks for the game.

The Lady Bears return home on Wednesday, Feb. 19, when they play host to crosstown rival Coppin State. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Hill Field House. It will be the second and final regular season meeting between the two rivals in a span of nine days. The Eagles won the first meeting at Coppin, 76-60 on Feb. 10.
