CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Dec. 21, 2014)-Braennan Farrar scored a game-high 20 points to lead four Lady Bears in double figures scoring, but it wasn't enough, as Morgan State dropped a 62-56 decision to Tennessee Tech in the consolation game of the Chattanooga Christmas Classic on Sunday afternoon at The McKenzie Arena.
The loss extended Morgan State's losing skid to a season-long eight straight and ended the Lady Bears' three-game winning streak over Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) opponents. Morgan State, which fell to 3-5 against OVC members, also fell to 0-2 all-time against Tennessee Tech.
Farrar also finished with a game-high five assists and had a game-high four steals in the loss. Danielle Robinson finished with 11 points, including three three-pointers, while Zuri White and Dinah Jones added 10 points apiece for the Lady Bears. Jones added four assists and White along with Lexus Spears totaled a game-high seven rebounds each.Â
Tennessee Tech (3-9) was led by Candace Parson, Catherine Taylor and Yaktavia Hickson, who all scored 12 points apiece. Mariah Dean added eight points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, who ended a two-game losing skid and have now won just two of their last 11 games.
Morgan State (2-10) started out hot, scoring eight consecutive points to jump out to an early 13-5 lead. Tennessee Tech later countered with an 11-0 spurt, capped off by a three-pointer from Shunice Herron to give the Golden Eagles an 18-15 lead with 6:53 left in the half.
The Lady Bears ended a six minute-29 second scoring drought with two Farrar free throws and reclaimed the lead, 19-18 on a jumper by Jones with 5:59 to play.Â
The Golden Eagles scored the next four points and their lead grew to as much as five points (27-22), before Morgan State closed out the half with a 6-1 run, including a steal and layup by Farrar prior to the horn sounding to even the score at 28-28 at halftime.Â
The Lady Bears came out of the intermission once again on fire, as they scored the first nine points of the half to take a 37-28 advantage after a jumper by White less than three minutes into the second half.
Tennessee Tech slowly chipped away at Morgan State's lead and got within 39-36, following a three-pointer by Taylor with 13:10 to play. The Golden Eagles then used an 11-3 spurt to take a 47-42 lead at the 9:16 mark.Â
Morgan State responded with a 7-1 run, including a three-pointer by Robinson, which ended a seven minute drought without a field goal, as the Lady Bears reclaimed the lead at 49-48 with 5:53 to play.
However, that would be the last lead of the game for Morgan State, as the Golden Eagles scored the next seven points to take a 55-49 lead and never looked back.
Tennessee Tech's bench outscored Morgan State's 23-3. The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 24-14 advantage in points in the paint and held a 13-4 cushion over the Lady Bears in second chance points. Both teams scored 11 points off of the other's turnovers and had four fast break points.
The Lady Bears will be off until January 1, when they ring in the New Year with a non-conference game against rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at RAC Arena.
