Morgan State Upended By Hampton, 99-45

Box Score HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 20, 2014)-The Hampton Lady Pirates entered Monday's contest against Morgan State riding a 34-game winning streak against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponents, following their 28-point (80-52) victory over Coppin State on Saturday in a game that was for sole possession of first-place in the league standings.

The last time the Lady Bears faced a MEAC opponent who was on a multiple seasons consecutive game winning streak like that, was during the semifinals of the 2007 MEAC Tournament, when the Lady Bears knocked off crosstown rival Coppin State, 69-67 to end the Eagles' 49-game winning streak.

Unfortunately, on this day the Lady Bears would not be able to duplicate that success and end Hampton's winning streak.

Malia Tate-DeFreitas scored a team-high 22 points and Kenia ole added 20, as the Lady Pirates dealt Morgan State a 99-45 loss at the HU Convocation Center. The game, which was televised live on ESPN3, was the 35th straight victory for Hampton, as well as the Lady Pirates' seventh straight win over the Lady Bears.

Alyssa Bennett shot 8-of-9 from the field to finish with 18 points, while Nicole Hamilton added 14 points to help the Lady Pirates score a season-high in points, surpassing the 98 points scored earlier this season against Utah State.

Hampton (14-4, 5-0 MEAC) finished the game shooting (37-of-80) from the floor for 46 percent, including 10-of-24 from three-point range for 41.7 percent. Tate-DeFreitas went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, while Cole drained 4-of-5 for the Lady Pirates.

Tracey Carrington scored a game-high 23 points for Morgan State, who fell to 2-15 overall and 0-4 in the MEAC. Carrington, who scored 15 of her points in the second half, also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in the loss, which was the eighth straight for the Lady Bears this season.

Morgan State finished the game shooting 14-of-53 (26 percent) from the field and missed all four of their three-point attempts.

The Lady Bear's Dinah Jones converted a free throw to complete a three-point play and bring Morgan State within 6-5 with 16:51 to play in the opening half. But that would be as close as the guests would get, as Hampton used a 28-7 run over the next eight minutes to take a 34-12 lead with 8:40 remaining.

Hampton would close out the half on an 18-9 run to take a 52-25 advantage at the break.

The second half was pretty much the same as the Lady Pirates added on to their 73-38 cushion by using a 20-0 run over the course of seven minutes to take a 93-38 lead. Carrington made the first of two free throws to end the run with 4:54 left and Danielle Forrest scored on a layup with 3:47 to play to cut the deficit to 52 points (93-41) and give the guests their first field goal in over nine minutes.

The Lady Pirates domination in the game was triggered by the 31 Morgan State turnovers, including 20 steals. Bennett led the charge with five steals and Cole added four.

Hampton also tallied 10 blocked shots as a team with Tyler Hobgood recording four blocks and Hamilton finishing with three. Hamilton also notched a game-high six assists, as the hosts held a 21-3 advantage over Morgan State in assists.

The Lady Bears conclude their four-game road swing when they take on the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C., before traveling to Durham, N.C. to square off against the Eagles of North Carolina Central on Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m.
