NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 18, 2014)-Tracey Carrington scored a game-high 22 points and Danielle Robinson added 12, but it wasn't enough, as the Lady Bears dropped their seventh straight contest, following a 61-52 loss at Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.
The Spartans (8-8, 4-1 MEAC) were led by Rae Corbo, who finished with a team-high 16 points, while Rachel Gordon added a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Logan Powell came off the bench to score 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Norfolk State, which picked up its third consecutive win and is off to its best start since the 2001-02 squad also started 4-1 in MEAC play.
The Lady Bears (2-14, 0-3 MEAC), who have now dropped their ninth straight road contest this season in as many tries, scored the game's first eight points less than three minutes into the contest with Robinson draining two three-pointers.
The hosts would even the score at 11, after Powell hit the first of two free throws with 9:41 to play.
Norfolk State would take its first lead of the game on a three-pointer from Kieera Basey at the 7:01 mark to give the Spartans a 14-13 lead.
The teams would trade leads several times, but Norfolk State would cling to a 20-19 halftime advantage.
Morgan State appeared to be in control when it took a seven-point lead (43-36) with 7:37 remaining after going on a 10-4 spurt. But the Spartans would not go away, using a 25-9 run to close out the game and defeat Morgan State.
The Lady Bears return to the court on Monday evening with a showdown against defending MEAC champion Hampton live on ESPN3.com. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center. The Lady Pirates (13-4, 4-0 MEAC) have won six straight over Morgan State and lead the all-time series, 24-11. Hampton handed Coppin State an 80-52 loss on Saturday.
