BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 11, 2014)-South Carolina State's Kourtney Williams scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead four Lady Bulldogs in double figures scoring, as SC State defeated Morgan State, 80-53 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
DayShaun Richbow scored 16 points and had a team-high five assists, while Persephone Goodwin finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and had a game-high four blocked shots. Cabriel Duren added 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who have now won four straight over Morgan State.
The win marked the third consecutive and the first road victory of the season for the Lady Bulldogs, while Morgan State dropped a season-long sixth straight. The loss also marked the fourth consecutive home loss for the Lady Bears, who went winless on its four-game homestand.
Morgan State (2-13, 0-2 MEAC) was led by Tracey Carrington, who finished with a team-high 16 points. Danielle Forrest added 10 points, while Dinah Jones scored nine points and had five rebounds. Simone Sampson led the Lady Bears with a game-high nine rebounds.
The first nine minutes was back and forth with both teams going on mini runs, but also allowing runs. The Lady Bulldogs scored six straight to take a 6-2 lead, only to watch the host Lady Bears go on a 7-0 run to take a 9-6 lead.
Morgan State then used a 6-0 spurt in the midst of a 13-4 run, capped off by three straight free throws by Carrington to take a 22-13 advantage with 8:34 to play.
The Lady Bulldogs countered with a 13-5 run over nearly five minutes to pull within 27-26. SCSU reclaimed the lead at 32-31 on a basket by Richbow, but Carrington scored on a runner with six seconds left to give the hosts a 33-32 halftime lead.Â
SCSU (4-8, 2-0 MEAC) used an 11-0 run in just under three minutes in the second half to take its largest lead of the game at 47-37 with 15:07 to play. By this time the Lady Bulldogs had turned up their aggressiveness and outplayed Morgan State on and away from the boards. SCSU had multiple by getting to the loose balls and with hustle plays.
The Lady Bears got back-to-back baskets from Sampson and Carrington to cut the deficit to 47-41, but SCSU responded with a 19-3 run, including 13 straight points to increase its lead to 66-44 with 5:35 remaining.Â
SCSU later used a 14-6 run, capped off by a layup from Richbow to give the guests their largest lead of the game (30 points) at 80-50 with 33 seconds left.Â
The Lady Bulldogs shot 55.9 percent (33-of-59) for the game, while Morgan State hit 21-of-60 (35 percent) from the floor.
South Carolina State ended the game with a 38-30 rebounding advantage over Morgan State. SCSU recorded 11 steals with Richbow leading the way with a game-high five and Williams adding three.Â
Morgan State will take to the road next week when it travels to the Tidewater area of Virginia for two MEAC contests. The Lady Bears will visit Norfolk State on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. at Echols Hall, before battling defending league champion, Hampton on Monday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
