BALTIMORE, Md.
– The Morgan State University men's tennis team defeated MD-Eastern Shore, 5-0, on Saturday to clinch the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division title and No. 1 North seed in the MEAC Championship. It marks Morgan State's second straight North Division title under head coach Sean Holcomb-Jones.

The Bears improved to 5-16 overall and 4-0 in MEAC play, while UMES fell to 0-11 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

"I am extremely proud of our men's team earning their second title," said Holcomb-Jones. "It's a lot different than last year when we were not expected to win -- this year everyone is giving you their best shot as a defending champion."

Junior Dmitriy Borodkin posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Wirlen Elame in number 1 singles to lead the Bears. Senior Richard King recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win against Kijontray McClay at number 2. Senior James Lee and sophomore William Jay completed the singles shutout by winning their matches 6-1, 6-1, and 6-0, 6-0 respectively.

Morgan State won the doubles point in easy fashion. Borodkin teamed-up with Jay to drop Elame and McClay, 8-2, while King and Lee posted a commanding 8-1 win against Joseph Journey and Christopher Charles.

Holcomb-Jones spoke about the Bears' chances in the upcoming MEAC Tournament.

"In the tournament, I just want to take it one match at a time. It's a been awhile since a team from MSU has been able to get out of the first round. The Southern Division is historically tough, and any team we play will be a tough matchup."

"We're just going to take it one match at a time."

The Bears will resume action at the MEAC Championships in Raleigh, N.C., on Friday, April 19. The tournament will last three days until April 21.
