PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Dec. 7, 2013)-Katie Cizynski scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to lead Fairfield to a 75-46 victory over Morgan State on Day 1 of the Brown Bear Classic on Saturday evening at Pizzitola Sports Center.
Alexys Vazquez scored 12 points on four three-pointers, while Kristin Schatzlein added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Stags. Kelsey Carey came off the bench to score 11 points, as Fairfield advanced to the title game on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Maine.
Morgan State (1-5) was led by
Tracey Carrington, who finished with 20 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Ivy Harrington and
Danielle Forrest each scored six points.
Fairfield (4-3) jumped out to an 11-2 lead, following a three-pointer by Vazquez with 16:30 to play in the first half. Morgan State used a 6-2 spurt to pull within 13-8, but would get no closer than five points.
The Lady Bears trailed 15-10 after a jumper by Carrington, but the Stags would then go on a 14-8 run to take a 27-16 advantage, and held a 34-20 lead at the break.
Fairfield's lead blossomed to 25 points as the Stags used a 16-5 run to begin the second half and take a 50-25 lead with 13:30 to play.
Morgan State would be held scoreless during a stretch of three and a half minutes in the midst of a 13-2 run by the Stags, as Fairfield extended their cushion to a game-high 31 points (71-40) with 4:08 to play.
Fairfield shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field and was 5-of-20 (25 percent) from three-point range. Morgan State went 15-of-56 (26.8 percent) from the floor and hit just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.
The Lady Bears shot 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free throw line, while the Stags shot 57.1 percent (12-of-21). Fairfield held a 48-35 rebounding advantage over Morgan State and had 22 assists, while Morgan State had seven.
Morgan State will take on host Brown on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the consolation game. The two teams last met in the consolation game of the 2009 Brown Classic. The Brown Bears would win the contest in overtime, 65-62.
