MORGAN SINKS PIRATES IN THE END, 80-78

HAMPTON, Va. -- Senior swingman DeWayne Jackson came off the bench to score 24 points and Morgan State edged Hampton 80-78 Saturday night in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.
 
Jackson hit 9 of 14 field goal attempts, 3 of 5 from 3-point range, for the Bears (5-9, 2-1). Three teammates also finished in double figures. Anthony Hubbard scored 13 points, Justin Black 12 and Ian Chiles 10.
 
The Bears led 42-33 at halftime, but Hampton (5-11, 2-1) rallied. The Pirates got double-doubles from Deron Powers (19 points, 10 assists) and Emmanuel Okoroba (15 points, 10 rebounds). Although Hampton was outscored 40-18 in the paint, the Pirates hit 31 of 36 foul shots to get back in it.
 
They led 76-75 on six straight Okoroba points. But Chiles broke a 77-77 tie on a layup with 1:11 left and Donte Pretlow hit a foul shot with 42 seconds left to make it 80-77.

The Pirates shot 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the floor and hit seven of their 19 3-pointers (36.8 percent), as well as 31 of their 36 free throws (86.1 percent). Hampton also held a slim 39-38 edge on the glass.
 
Morgan State shot 46.0 percent (29-for-63) from the floor and hit six of its 15 3-pointers.

The Bears will wrap-up its Tidewater swing with a Monday night matchup against the reigning MEAC champion Spartans of Norfolk State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
