Lady Bears Complete Sweep OF UMES With 16-1 Thumping

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 29, 2012)-The Morgan State offense erupted on Sunday afternoon for 16 runs on 16 hits, as the Lady Bears completed a three-game weekend sweep of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) with a 16-1 victory in five innings over the visiting Lady Hawks at Lois T. Murray Field.
 
Sunday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division victory marked the first three-game winning streak for the Lady Bears this season. The last time the Lady Bears' swept a three-game series was a year ago today and ironically came against UMES.  The 16 runs were also the most scored by Morgan State this season, surpassing the 15 runs against Bowie State on April 1.
 
Morgan State's Tiffany Rubin and Deanna Matlock each went 3-for-3 on the day. Rubin finished with three runs scored and 2RBI, while Matlock scored twice and had 3RBI. Amber Frame and Danielle Lugo both were 2-for-3 at the plat. Frame scored two runs and had 3RBI, while Lugo scored three times and had 2RBI.
 
The Lady Bears (11-21, 5-10 MEAC) went to work early with three runs in the first inning, before adding seven more runs in the second and five in the third inning to take a 15-1 lead. Morgan State closed out the scoring with a run in the fourth inning when Matlock singled through the left side to score Shareday Christina.
 
UMES (0-31, 0-15 MEAC) were led by Cyanna Scott, who went 2-for-2 on the day, while Jasmine James and Carmen Gurrola each finished 1-for-2 at the plate, including a double. Gurrola scored the Lady Hawks lone run of the game in the second inning, when S Roane grounded out to Morgan State pitcher, Jordan Eades.
 
Eades, who was awarded all three victories over the weekend, improved to 7-9 on the season. Eades surrendered a run on five hits and two walks, while striking out five batters in five innings of work.
 
Gurrola (0-31), who was charged with the loss for UMES, allowed three walks and recorded a strikeout in four innings of work.
 
Morgan State returns to action next weekend when they host crosstown rival Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC ) North Division contest at Lois T. Murray Field. The three-game series will be the season finale for the Lady Bears and will also include 'Senior Day' for six seniors (Saba Zewdu, Amber Frame, Sakina Smith, Lydia Walther-Rodriguez, Boshia Richardson and Devina Brown. The match-up between the Lady Bears and Eagles gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5, followed by a single game on Sunday.
