Softball Gets Swept By Norfolk State, 13-7

NORFOLK, Va. (April 15, 2012)-The Morgan State softball team finally found its offense on Sunday afternoon in the series finale against Norfolk State, but it still wasn't enough, as the host Spartans completed a three-game sweep of the Lady Bears with a 13-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division victory at the NSU Softball Field.
 
The loss was the second consecutive MEAC series sweep suffered by the Lady Bears (7-19, 1-8 MEAC), who have now lost its last seven straight league contests. Norfolk State (18-19, 7-2 MEAC) on the other hand has now won its last six conference games.
 
Morgan State wasted no time scoring in the first inning when Shareday Christina led off the game with a double. Christina then stole third and advanced home on the throwing error from the Norfolk State catcher to give Morgan State a 1-0 lead.
 
After the Spartans scored two runs in the first, Boshia Richardson cranked out a solo shot to left centerfield to even the score at 2-2.
 
The host Spartans countered with two runs each in the second and third innings to go up 6-2 after three innings.
 
The guests put up a three spot in the fourth inning to pull within 6-5. Tiffany Rubin doubled to drive in Deanna Matlock, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Boshia Richardson followed and was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Amber Bachman then recorded a two-run single down the left field line to bring Morgan State within 6-5.
 
Morgan State again threatened in the fifth inning, but only managed a run when Rubin's single to right field drove in Danielle Lugo to even the score at 6-6.
 
Norfolk State would however break open the game with four runs in the bottom fifth inning to take a 10-6 lead.
 
Morgan State got back on the board in the sixth when Amber Frame singled in Shanice Crowder, who earlier in the inning hit a one-out double to bring the visiting Lady Bears within 10-7.
 
The Spartans then countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning for the 13-7 victory. Norfolk State's Liz Riley earned the victory to improve to 9-10 on the season. Riley allowed two runs on three hits and had two strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
 
Bachman, who split the pitching duties with Lugo, was charged with the loss for Morgan State, falling to 3-7 on the season. Bachman tallied three strikeouts, but allowed eight runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Lugo allowed five runs on nine hits in two innings pitched.
 
Rubin led Morgan State with two hits, a run scored and RBI, while Bachman went 1-for-3 with a team-high 2RBI. Boshia Richardson finished 1-for-2, including a homerun, run scored and RBI. Richardson's homer was her third this season, tying Rubin for the team lead.
 
Norfolk State was led by Danielle Wright, who finished 4-for-5 on the day with three runs scored and 4RBI. Gipsey Ramirez had a 3-for-4 performance with a run and RBI.
 
Morgan State will head to Howard next weekend for a three-game MEAC North Division contest against the Lady Bison, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday with a single game at noon.
