Norfolk State Completes Doubleheader Sweep of Morgan State, 15-2

Morgan State 2, Norfolk State 15

NORFOLK, Va. (April 14, 2012)-Morgan State's Tiffany Rubin went 2-for-2 at the plate, including a solo homerun, scored a run and accounted for both of the Lady Bears' RBIs, but it wasn't enough, as the host Spartans thumped Morgan State 15-2 in five innings in the second game of Saturday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division doubleheader at the NSU Softball Field.

Norfolk State's victory completed the doubleheader sweep of Morgan State and solidified a series victory over the visiting Lady Bears.

The Spartans (17-19, 6-2 MEAC) were led by Haley Ward, who finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored and 2RBI. Morgan Boyd went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and 2RBI, while Kathy Cortez went 2-for-4 with a run and a game-high 4RBI to lead Norfolk State, which has won five straight league contests.

Norfolk State would score 15 runs on 12 hits, while Morgan State was held to four hits, scoring two runs. The 15 runs scored by the Spartans were the most runs by a Morgan State opponent this season.

Morgan State (7-18, 1-7 MEAC) jumped on the board first when Tiffany Rubin hit a solo shot to left center, giving the guests a 1-0 lead in the second inning. But it would be all Norfolk State after that.

The host Spartans would put up a five spot in the bottom half of the inning, including an eight-run third inning to extend their lead to 13-1. Morgan State would add its final run in the top of the fourth when Rubin singled up the middle to score Danielle Lugo, before Norfolk State responded with a two-run shot to centerfield by Nikki Jones for the game's final score.

Jamie Schulle (9-9) was awarded the victory, while Danielle Lugo (0-3) was charged with the loss.

Morgan State and Norfolk State will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for noon at the NSU Softball Field.
