Softball Opens Up MEAC Slate On Road Against Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (March 23, 2012)-After a six-day layoff for spring break, the Morgan State softball team returns to action this weekend with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division season-opener on the road against the Hampton Pirates.

Due to the potential of inclement weather, the three-game series will get underway with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at noon at the Lady Pirates Softball Complex instead of 2 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday also at noon.

The Lady Bears (4-11), picked to finish tied for fifth with Hampton in the MEAC preseason poll, are coming off a 3-3 week last weekend. Things started off rough for Morgan State, which began the weekend with a 1-3 mark at the Savannah State Classic (3/16-17), hosted by MEAC newcomer Savannah State.

Morgan State, which prior to the Savannah State Classic hadn't played in 19 days since taking part in the 49er Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. (2/24-26), dropped Friday's opening doubleheader to the host Tigers with two heartbreaking losses (2-3 and 0-3). The Lady Bears then salvaged the third game of the series, defeating the Tigers 11-9 on Saturday, but suffered a 16-7 set back from Alabama State in the finale.

The team regrouped and on Sunday swept MEAC South foe North Carolina A&T by identical 10-7 scores in a non-conference doubleheader in Greensboro.

Hampton enters the contest with an 11-17 mark after dropping a non-conference doubleheader at George Washington on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
