Morgan State Cheerleaders Prepare for STUNT competition at Temple

BALTIMORE, Md. – This week the Morgan State Cheerleaders are preparing for competition against Bowling Green State and Hofstra on March 24-25, 2012 at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa.

“We have our work cut out for us this weekend,” said MSU head coach Theresa Gibson. “We're going up against two much larger universities that we haven't faced in the past.”

“Although Bowling Green State and Hofstra didn't compete in College STUNT last season, they are prepped and ready to bring it. The Cheer Bears will have to dig deep, stay focused, and work as a well-oiled machine to fair well with both of these competitors.”

Gibson added, “If we do what I know we can do, both games should prove to be interesting for all competitors and spectators as well.  We'll especially be looking for strong performances from senior Ashley Cottrell, junior Amanda Ross, and freshmen Amber Roberson, Sydney Lee, and A'Chana Goldston in tumbling to boost our scores in the tumbling and jumping areas.”

"Fliers, Candace Cummins, Shydia Snow, Nandi Henderson, Devan Thomas, Samara George, and Sade Sumter will need to perform at their peak to assist us in scoring high in the partner stunt quarter.  They largely rely on the strength of Danielle Gibson, Chantel Wimbush, Tameka Lyons, Che'Yona Irick, Shayla Clark, Tiana Lynch, Amber and Shadae Roberson, Javonna Welch, Jeanah McCall at the base positions and Kenya White, Darnese Wiggins, and others at the back spot position.”

“We'll need everyone to step up their game to be successful this week.”

The Cheer Bears' STUNT team will face Bowling Green State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m., followed by a game against Hofstra on Sunday at 11 a.m.

STUNT is a new competitive team sport that was derived from traditional cheerleading, STUNT removes the crowd-leading and focuses on the technical and athletic components, which include partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps and tumbling skills. Originally designed to be considered for NCAA Emerging Sport status, STUNT has resonated with college level athletes.
