Coppin State Sweeps Series With Victory Over Morgan State, 68-62

Morgan State 62, Coppin State 68

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 22, 2012)-Coppin State's Jeanine Manley scored a game-high 18 points, including seven of the last 10 Coppin State points to lead the host Eagles past crosstown rival Morgan State, 68-62 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up on Wednesday evening at the Physical Education Complex.

Leola Spotwood and Larrisa Carter both added 12 points and Crystal Whittington finished with 10 points, as Coppin State swept the season series over Morgan State for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Morgan State (6-20, 3-10 MEAC) was led by Moneshia Davis, who came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, while Tracey Carrington added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

When Morgan State looks back on its loss to its crosstown rival it will have to look no further than rebounds and the desire to win. The Eagles held a 53-38 rebounding advantage over Morgan State, many of which created second chance opportunities for the host Eagles.

Spotwood finished with a game-high 11 boards and Carter added 10, as both players notched double-doubles for the evening.
Morgan State was also done in by 19 turnovers, which were turned into 22 Coppin State points and several lane violations on the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears used a 9-0 run to jump out to a 20-11 lead and took a 31-25 lead at the break, but there was still another half to go.

The host Eagles used a 21-11 run to start the second half and took a 46-42 lead with 10:37 remaining in the contest.
Coppin State (16-11, 11-3 MEAC) continued its aggressiveness in the second half, beating Morgan State to all the loose balls and creating second chance opportunities to extend its cushion to 54-48.

Morgan State appeared to have regained its composure and seemed to have evened the score at 58 apiece on two free throws by Carrington. But the second one was waved off due to a lane violation on the Lady Bears.

But Davis responded with a three-pointer from the top of the key on Morgan State's next possession to cap off a 12-6 spurt by the Lady Bears and even the score at 60 all with 1:55 to play.

That's when Manley would take over the game down low, scoring the next four points as the Eagles quickly went up 66-60 with 59 seconds left.

Carrington would end the bleeding for Morgan State with two free throws to cut the deficit to 66-62, but that would be as close as the Lady Bears would get. Spotwood and Manley would each hit one free throw for the game's final score.

Morgan State will travel to Princess Anne, Md. on Saturday, Feb. 25 as the Lady Bears will look to end its six-game losing skid and spoil homecoming festivities for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Coppin State's next game will also be against UMES, as they will battle the Lady Hawks on Monday, Feb. 27 at the Hytche Center.
