Lady Bears Fall Short At Towson, 61-57

Box Score TOWSON, Md. (Nov. 13, 2012)-Morgan State's Bianca Jarrett scored a game-high 17 points and Moneshia Davis added 12 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Bears dropped a 61-57 road decision to crosstown rival Towson in a non-conference game at the Towson Center.
 
Towson (2-0) was led by Tanisha McTiller, who finished with 14 points before fouling out, while Camille Alberson came off the bench and also tallied 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Michelle Peebles recorded 11 points in a reserve role.
 
Morgan State overcame its largest deficit of the contest, at 11-points (38-27) in the second half by using a 29-18 run over the next 14 minutes to even the score at 56 all with 46 seconds remaining. Jarrett, who scored six straight of Morgan's final eight points in the run, knocked down two free throws at the 1:04 mark and Carrington added two more free throws to even the score.
 
However, the hosts responded with a layup and free throw by Krystal Pearson, giving the Tigers a 59-56 advantage. Jarrett later added a free throw for the Lady Bears and Alberson followed with two free throws for Towson for the game's final score.
 
Morgan State (1-1) took a 6-4 lead after back-to-back three-pointers by Davis with 17:16 left in the opening half. But the Lady Bears would rely too heavily on the three-point shot and would miss their next 12 attempts.
 
A steal and layup by Whitney Southerland (seven points, game-high four steals) gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the evening at 12-8.
 
The host Tigers held an eight-point cushion, but the guests responded with an 8-3 spurt to pull within 24-21 after a jumper by Alauna Jackson with 3:23 to play. But Towson would close out the half with a 6-2 run to take a 30-23 lead at the break.
 
Towson shot 45 percent (25-of-55) from the floor and went 1-of-8 (12.5 percent) from three-point range for the game. The Tigers shot 45 percent (10-of-22) from the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bears shot 30 percent (19-of-62) from the field, including 6-of-23 (23 percent) from three-point range. Morgan State connected on 13-of-17 (76 percent) from the charity stripe.
 
The Tigers held a 47-33 rebounding advantage over Morgan State and also finished with 16 assists to eight by the Lady Bears.
 
Morgan State returns to action this Friday, Nov. 16, when they travel to Fairfax, Va. to take on its second straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent, the George Mason Patriots. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Patriot Center.
