Morgan State open New Year with 87-74 loss at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Perris Blackwell and Angelo Caloiaro scored 19 points apiece and combined to shoot 13 for 20 from the field, leading San Francisco to an 87-74 win over Morgan State on Tuesday night at War Memorial Gym.
 
Ameer Ali scored a career-high 21 points in 26 minutes for the Bears, who have lost their second consecutive game and suffered their eighth loss on the road.
 
The Bears (2-9, 0-0 MEAC) trailed by 11 before Ali scored on back-to back baskets to trim the Dons' advantage to 58-51 at the 9:01 mark of the second half. USF responded with a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 67-53 with 6 minutes to play.
 
DeWayne Jackson hit his first basket of the night on a 3-pointer with 3 minutes left to cut the deficit to 74-64. Cody Doolin (13 points) answered by nailing a 3-pointer followed by a layup by Caloiaro to push the lead to 79-64 (2:09) as the Dons were able to hold off MSU down the stretch.
 
Jackson had nine points (3-15 FG) for the Bears after being held scoreless in the first half. Aric Brooks scored a season-high 10 points, while Kevin Thompson chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
 
USF (10-6, 0-2 WCC) finished the game by scoring 36 points in the paint, compared to 16 by the Bears.
 
The Dons connected on 9 of 20 (45 percent) 3-pointers and shot 53.8 percent (28-52) from the floor, while the Bears shot 45.9 percent (28-61) and was 9 of 29 (31 percent) beyond the arc.
 
USF's defense did a good job of keeping the Bears' two standouts in check. DeWayne Jackson and Kevin Thompson combined for just four points on 2-for-10 shooting in the first half.
 
Larry Bastfield led the Bears with 11 points at the break.
