NC Central 59, Morgan State 64
BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 23, 2012)-Amarah Williams tallied a game- and career-high 19 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds to lead Morgan State to a 64-59 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory on Monday evening at Hill Field House over North Carolina Central (NCCU).
Williams, who recorded her second consecutive double-double and third of the season, shot 7-for-10 from the floor, 5-for-6 from the free throw line and added two steals to lead the Lady Bears to their second consecutive win. Fellow freshman Tracey Carrington finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and a game-high five assists, while Omara Parker came off the bench and also added 13 points and eight rebounds and finished with three steals to help Morgan State close out its four-game homestand by winning their final two contests to go 2-2 at home.
North Carolina Central (2-17, 0-6 MEAC), which entered the contest having lost their previous two MEAC games by a combined 81 points on the road at Howard (41 points) and at Coppin State (40 points) was led Kabrina Truesdale, who scored a team-high 16 points and had a team-high four steals. Chasidy Williams notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Lakisha Evans came off the bench to score 10 points.
The visiting Lady Eagles overcame a five-point first half deficit (23-18) by using an 8-2 run to take a 26-25 lead with 3:38 remaining. But the Lady Bears closed out the period on an 8-0 run to take a 33-26 advantage at the break.
Morgan State (5-14, 2-4 MEAC) extended its lead to as much as 12 points (40-28) after a Williams' free throw with 17:39 to play.
However, NCCU would go on a 22-12 run over the next eight minutes, capped off by a trey from Truesdale to bring the Lady Eagles within 52-50 with 9:25 to go, but that would be as close as the guests would get.
NCCU shot 44 percent (26-of-58) for the game, while Morgan State shot 24-of-71 (33 percent). The Lady Bears hit just two of their 19 three-point attempts, while the Lady Eagles went 2-for-10 from three-point range.
Morgan State out rebounded NCCU, 52-32, marking just the third time this season the Lady Bears held a rebounding advantage over an opponent. Morgan State also forced 23 Lady Eagle turnovers, but committed 21 turnovers of their own.
The Lady Bears recorded 13 steals with Moneshia Davis totaling a game-high seven to give her 96 for her career. Davis, who finished five points, five rebounds and three assists, also tallied a game-high four blocks in the win.
The Lady Bears will return to the road when they visit the Tidewater area of Virginia to take on league foes Norfolk State (1/28) and Hampton (1/30). The Hampton contest will appear on ESPNU.
