BALTIMORE, Maryland. – Human rights activist, pioneer for racial equality, internationally recognized expert on sports issues, Dr. Richard Lapchick will speak to Morgan State University student athletes on February 8th at 7:30 p.m. in the USC Theatre at Morgan State. He will discuss the healing power of sport.

The event is coordinated through an empowerment program designed for Morgan State Universities student athletes called BSFE (Bears Striving for Excellence) that is fully funded by the NCAA.

“I am pleased the NCAA has provided funding to support important and invaluable program designed to empower student athletes at HBCU's. I am humbled the BSFE program has invited me to speak on
the topic of the Healing Power of Sport—a subject I am very passionate about.” said Dr. Lapchick. “I have heard so many wonderful things about the MSU student athletes and I look forward to meeting them.”

Floyd Kerr, the Athletic Director at Morgan State University, feels Dr. Lapchick's presence and message to the student athletes will be invaluable and he will deliver a talk they will never forget.

“I am happy that Dr. Lapchick is coming to speak to our student athletes and support the BSFE Program says Morgan State Universities Athletic Director Floyd Kerr. The empowerment life skills seminars at MSU have significantly changed how our student-athletes view the future and Dr. Lapchick coming to our campus will be life changing for our students, coaches, and others.”

The BSFE program was created by Marketing Guru and former Sr. Executive for Athletic Retailers Champs Sports and Footaction, Marc Williams.  He is now a full time Doctoral Student at West Virginia University in the Department of Human Resources and Education, pursuing his PhD in Interdisciplinary Education.

“Dr. Lapchick will be the highlight of the BSFE seminars, I believe the MSU student athletes will be inspired by his presence, passion, warmth and will motivate them to stand up for social change” said Marc Williams.

“One of the biggest reasons I decided to come to support the BSFE program is because of Marc”, said Dr. Lapchick. “In the 17 years I have known Marc, he has always emphasized the importance of a good education and creating an empowerment program for student athletes is exciting. I am grateful to the NCAA for believing in his vision and his partnership with MSU.”

Dr. Richard E. Lapchick is often described as “the racial conscience of sport.” He brought his commitment to equality and his belief that sport can be an effective instrument of positive social change to the University of Central Florida where he accepted an endowed chair in August 2001. Lapchick became the only person named as “One of the 100 Most Powerful People in Sport” to head up a sport management program. He remains President and CEO of the National Consortium for Academics and Sport and helped bring the NCAS national office to UCF.
