2011 MSU SCHEDULE & RESULTS
OFFICIAL NSU WEBSITE
GAME TIME
• Morgan State returns from a four-game road swing to face the conference-leader Norfolk State Spartans. The contest will tip-off at Hill Field House on Saturday, Jan. 16th at 4 p.m. (ET). It will be MSU's first of a four-game homestand, and will mark just the third home game of the season. The game will be broadcast live on WEAA, 88.9 FM.
BEAR BITS
• NSU will enter Hill Field House riding a 5-game winning streak, including a 68-48 win against Howard on Monday night in Echols Hall.
• DeWayne Jackson scored a game-high 23 points, but a Rashad Hassan dunk in the final minute turned out to be the game winner as the Tigers held on to a 57-55 victory over the Bears on Monday night.
• MSU played without head coach
Todd Bozeman, who was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation stemming from an incident that apparently occurred near the conclusion of the Bears contest at South Carolina State last Saturday. Asst. Coach
Kevin McClain assumed coaching responsibilities for the team in the interim.
• The Bears will look to rebound from last year's fourth place MEAC finish and reclaim the conference title for the fourth time in five years.
• The Bears completed the 2010-11 season with a 17-14 mark and posted a 10-6 MEAC record.
• MSU has played teams tough with losses to then-No. 14/15 Xavier, Southern California, Cal Poly, Ohio and Savannah State -- all on the road by nine points or fewer.
• Kevin Thompson leads the Bears and ranks among the MEAC leaders in scoring (ranked 8th - 13.6 ppg), rebounding (ranked 3rd - 8.2 rpg) and field goal percentage (ranked 5th - .544).
• Kevin Thompson has scored in double-digits in nine of 13 games, and has posted four double-doubles (pts & rebs) so far this season.
• Senior point guard
Larry Bastfield is the only Bear to have started in every game (31) last season...currently he has started in 44 straight games.
• Kevin Thompson's 11 rebound performance at Southern Cal gave him 1,005 rebounds for his career, making him the No. 3 leading rebounder in school history and only the third Morgan State player to post 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in school history. He currently has 1,342 points and 1,069 rebounds in his career.
• The Bears will look to rebound from last year's fourth place MEAC finish and reclaim the conference title for the fourth time in five years.
• The Bears completed the 2010-11 season with a 17-14 mark and posted a 10-6 conference record.
• Morgan State was selected to win the MEAC Regular Season Title, edging out last year's MEAC Tournament Champion Hampton. The Bears received eight (8) first place votes and a totaled 616 points to take hold of the conference's top spot going into the season.
• Redshirt sophomore
Ian Chiles (7-foot-2) is the first 7-footer since MSU legend Marvin Webster to grace the campus of Morgan State University ... Chiles, a Cliffside Park, N.J. product, is currently averaging 9.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks so far this season.
A BEARS WIN WOULD...
• Give the Bears its first victory against Norfolk State since an 88-87 double-overtime victory against the Spartans on February 27, 2010 at Hill Field House.
• Give the Bears a 2-1 record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
• Give
Todd Bozeman his 106th win as MSU's head coach.
• Give the Bears a 2-1 home record for the season.
• Improve
Todd Bozeman's overall record to 141 career wins.
• Improve
Todd Bozeman's regular season conference record to 64-20 (.761) since joining the Bears in 2006.
CHASING 1,000
• Junior forward
DeWayne Jackson has
973 points, and needs 27 more to become the 21st member of the 1,000-point club at Morgan State.
NOTE ON THE SPARTANS
• The Spartans hold a
28-11 all-time record against MSU since the series began during the 1959-60 season.
• NSU swept the series last year by defeating the Bears 76-74 during an ESPU televised game at Hill Field House, and on the road (69-63) at Echols Hall ... The Spartans' standout center
Kyle O'Quinn averaged 23.5 ppg against the Bears.
• NSU is ranked first place in the MEAC following its win over Howard and losses by B-CU and Morgan State.
TIGERS LAST GAME OUT
Chris McEachin and
Pendarvis Williams scored 16 points apiece and the Norfolk State defense turned in one of its finest efforts of the season in the Spartans' fifth straight win, a 68-48 decision over Howard on Monday night at Echols Hall. The win helps the Spartans improve to 12-5 overall, 4-0 in the MEAC, their best MEAC start since 2004-05. NSU hounded Howard (4-14, 1-4) into 27 percent shooting and forced 18 Bison turnovers.
BLACK OUT
Morgan State sophomore guard
Justin Black will miss the remainder of the season due to a fractured ankle. Black has not played since the Bears' home-opener against Murray State on Nov. 24
th, in which he scored seven points with three rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes. Black's absence, by the numbers, has been missed in the backcourt. The 6-2 sophomore averaged 9.2 points and 2.5 rebounds in 25.5 minutes in his first two games of the season.
LOOKING AHEAD
MSU will host Hampton in an ESPNU nationally televised game conference on Monday, January 16.
