WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 16, 2011)-Jamesia (Jamie) Smith scored a team-high 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting, all from three-point range to lead four Lady Bears in double figures, as Morgan State defeated host George Washington, 73-68 in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at the Charles E. Smith.
DeKeisha Mathis added 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-for-9 from three-point range, while Amarah Williams contributed 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, as the undersized Lady Bears outplayed and out hustled the Colonials for the second consecutive season. Last season Morgan State defeated GW, 70-66 in overtime in the opener of the Miami Holiday Classic.
Twice Morgan State (1-1) built a first half lead of 13 points the last coming on a three-pointer from the left corner from Whitney Southerland, giving the visitors a 25-12 lead with 10:58 left in the half.
The hosts Colonials however countered, using a 10-0 spurt to pull within 25-22. Morgan State, which only trailed 4-3 in the first half pushed its lead to 31-22 and held a 35-28 advantage following a free throw by Tracey Carrington at the 4:33 mark.
George Washington (1-1) would again respond, this time with a 6-0 run, all by Sara Mostafa to bring the hosts with 35-34 with 1:34 to play. Morgan State closed out the half with a layup by Williams and Smith knocked down a trey at the top of the key as the buzzer sounded to give the Lady Bears a 40-34 halftime cushion. Smith led all scorers in the first half with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting all from three-point range and Williams added 10.
The Lady Bears shot 46.9 percent (23-for-49) from the field and 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from three-point range.
GW was led by Brooke Wilson, who finished with a game-high 17 points and Sara Mostafa finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Danni Jackson added 11 points, while Tara Booker finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The hosts out rebounded Morgan State, 43-33. Morgan State was led by Carrington, who grabbed a team-high seven boards to go with her 10 points. Williams added six rebounds.
Morgan State will take to the road this weekend for two non-conference games. The Lady Bears first will visit Saint Bonaventure on Sunday at 1 p.m., before heading to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
