Kevin Thompson recorded his seventh double-double of the season by halftime, and finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds to help lead Morgan State to a 75-62 home victory against Beltway rival Howard on Saturday.
Aric Brooks matched his season-high by scoring 17 points, including 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line with four assists.
With the win the Bears improved to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The win also improved
Todd Bozeman's record to 39-7 (.848) inside the confines of Hill Field House.
“Every win in Division I is a good win, especially a conference win,” said Morgan State coach Todd Bozemen. “Starting off 2-0 in the conference is a good thing, we just want to take it one game at a time.”
Morgan State led by 19 in the first half as the Bears held a 28-6 advantage in the paint.
Howard (3-12, 0-1 MEAC) was led by Mike Phillips's game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Dadrian Collins added 14 and Kyle Riley finished with 12.
Morgan State pushed a 14-point halftime lead to 18 in the first six minutes of the second half. Howard's best stretch was a 12-3 run that included a 3-pointer from the deep corner by Kyle Riley and a pair of free throws by Collins, pulling the Bison within 63-56 with 7:40 remaining.
Justin Black's dish to Thompson stopped a five minute drought giving the Bears a 65-56 lead with 7:09 remaining.
The Bears scored 10 straight, including a clutch 3-pointer by
Derrick Banks with 4:48 remaining to help push the lead to 16. Brooks connected with
DeWayne Jackson for an alley-oop to help punctuate Morgan State's victory.
Jackson posted 11 points and
Ameer Ali chipped in 10 points with 10 boards.
The score was tied at 10 apiece when the Bears began dominating the paint led by
Kevin Thompson. The Bears outscored the Bison during a 20-6 run in which Thompson scored seven of his 15 points.
The Bison trailed 47-33 at the break.
