BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 31, 2011)-Morgan State senior Brittany Dodson, who was playing in her first game back since being medically sidelined two weeks ago, struggled from the floor, going 1-for-7 in 22 minutes of play. But it was her lone field goal that provided excitement and lifted the host Lady Bears to a 51-49 victory over visiting North Carolina A&T on Monday evening at Hill Field House.
Dodson, who came off the bench and finished with 11 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line, made her move to the basket then stepped back and hit a jumper along the right baseline over A&T's Jaleesa Sams, who had fallen down on the play for the game's winning basket.
The win completed a successful two-game homestand for the Lady Bears (12-8, 6-2 MEAC) and put them in sole possession of second-place in the league standings at the halfway point of the conference schedule. It was also the second straight win at home over the Lady Aggies, who have now lost two of the last three meetings to Morgan State.
Theresa Davis came off the bench to lead Morgan State with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting and added a team-high eight rebounds and had three steals. Her eight rebounds gives her 569 for career and moves her past Corin “Tiny” Adams (564 from 2007-10) for ninth all-time at Morgan State.
The Lady Aggies (9-10, 5-3 MEAC) were led by Sabre Proctor, who finished with a team-high 18 points, hauled in eight rebounds and had four steals for N.C. A&T, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Tracy King came off the bench and had nine points, while Jaleesa Sams grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The host Lady Bears extended their 25-22 halftime advantage to 40-34 after two free throws by Davis at the 9:05 mark. But A&T would not go away, countering with a 13-5 spurt to take a 47-45 lead after a three-point basket by King with 2:44 to play.
Morgan State would score the next four points to pull ahead 49-47, before King evened the score at 49 all, setting the stage for Dodson's game winner.
The Lady Bears begin the second half of the league slate when they return to action on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on the Lady Rattlers in a MEAC game at 5:30 p.m. FAMU was a 79-65 winner on Monday at South Carolina State.
