BALTIMORE, Md. (April 21, 2010)-The Morgan State men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. this week to take part in the 116th running of the Penn Relays held at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
The Penn Relays are the nation's oldest and largest relay carnival and has more than 22,000 entrants annually. More athletes compete at the Penn Relays than in the Olympic Games. More than 60 counties around the world have athletes competing at the Penn Relays. During the 35 hours of competition, more than 425 races will be run, an average of one race every five minutes.
The meet get underway on Tuesday with the start of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon and ends on Wednesday. Thursday, will mark the official kick off of the relays with the women's 400 meter hurdles championship, along with the women's high jump and pole vault all beginning at 10 a.m. The men's 400 meter championship and the start of the men's high jump and pole vault will start on Friday at 9 a.m. The Penn Relays conclude on Saturday, April 24, with the completion of several field events and championship races, as well as the excitement of all the relays. The final day of the Penn Relays also caps off the USA vs. the World Men's and Women's relays, which features many Olympians and this year will include Jamaican sprinter and three-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt.
